I wonder where his Hofner (and all his other guitars for that matter) are kept when he's not on the road?

Safe in his studio, I would imagine.

When he played in Tampa in the Space Within US tour, he fall down in the Piano hole with his hofner.

Although the official story may be that he uses the same bass he bought in 1963, he probably keeps that one at home or somewhere else where it would be safe, and for the concerts he uses an exact replica. Probably he owns more than one, in case of accidents.

I'm pretty sure its the same one, look at these photos:

[img][http://www.boinkwithme.com/nick/beatles/paul/pics/hofner2_10.jpg][/img]

[img][http://www.boinkwithme.com/nick/beatles/paul/pics/hofner2_11.jpg][/img]

You can see the setlist taped near the neck (which proves it was used in the Beatles era). Notice also a nastry scratch to the left near of the lower pickup.

Now look at this more recent photo:

[img][http://www.boinkwithme.com/nick/beatles/paul/pics/hofner2_13.jpg][/img]

It has the same exact scratch!

You can also see 2 little scratches on the right side of the 'upper pickup'

Paul had two Hofners in the 60s, but one was stolen. According to Wiki, this was during the filming of Let It Be:

Quote:
The company was made famous through its association with The Beatles, principally through their Höfner 500/1 model hollow-body electric bass, first manufactured in 1956. [1]

Paul McCartney played two left-handed 500/1 basses during most of the group's career - a 1961 model with pickups mounted close together towards the neck, and a 1963 model, with the second pickup mounted closer to the bridge. McCartney used the 1961 bass until the recording of With the Beatles in late 1963, when he obtained his second 500/1.

McCartney used his 1963 bass almost exclusively during The Beatles' touring career, using his 1961 bass (which was repaired and refinished in 1964) as a backup. Although by 1966 McCartney had begun using a Rickenbacker bass in-studio, he did break out his 1961 model for the "Revolution" promo film in 1968 and for the the documentary Let It Be the following year. During the shooting, however, the 1961 bass was stolen, and McCartney used his newer Höfner for the remainder of the film, including the infamous rooftop performance. McCartney has continued to use his 1963 Höfner extensively throughout his solo career and continues to use it today.

I think I've read somewhere that the second Hofner, the 1963 one, was a gift from Hofner themselves.

As others have said, incredible to think Paul still uses the same instrument today!

Paul has only had 2 Höfner bass guitars..

the first..

..a 1961 Höfner 500/1 violin bass..which Paul paid £30 in 1961 (about £455 today)

he used that until 1963/64...

...when Höfner GAVE Paul a new, updated 1963 Höfner 500/1 violin bass to play

Paul switches to the newer model..
and he has his '61 refinished and installed with new pickups and pots..
alas, it takes a back seat to its newer brother and serves as its backup

(the '61 is on the left)

Paul uses the newer one till about 1965 when he switches to the Rickey

the older Höfner reappeared in the "Revolution" promo and also during rehearsals at Twickenham studios for LET IT BE

shortly after..
Paul's first bass, along with 2 of George's guitars, were stolen from a closet in Abbey Road studio

the last Beatles' appearance of his remaining Höfner is during the rooftop concert...

it remained unused until Elvis Costello requested it for "Flowers in the Dirt"

...and has been used ever since
Cool

btw...
there is NO WAY I knew all that.. Laughing

i found this great site about all the guitars used by the Beatles..

Go HERE to read about the Höfners..

and the rest, if you'd like
Very Happy

It's not a replica. He plays his Beatles' bass guitar. Probably the most famous guitar in all the world. Which is why in 2002, the Driving USA tour opened with a giant silhouette of the Hofner and then out stepped Paul holding it over his head. Cool They stopped throwing it a few years ago when his assistant almost dropped it. Shocked Almost. Very Happy

Here's a pic of Paul at the Hollywood Bowl on March 30th this year.
You can see the distinctive area of wear on the body under the bridge pick-up....

Of course, that doesn't prove that this IS the original 1963 Hofner, because he could have had the wear pattern replicated on a re-issue model, but that seems unlikely.

I found these two images:

I can clearly see two violin shaped Hofners in the second image.

i cant for the life of me find a picture that clearly shows it, but i googled it and Johns rickenbacker had/still has the same setlist taped to it. Very Happy

I think the picture of the side of the Hofner, with the setlist fully shown, can be found in the free program that was distributed in the 1989-90 tour.

I posted the Höfner question on Brian Ray's FB site, this is his respons:
"I have no idea how many he has.. on the road I think we have 2, one for a backup".

I love Paul you know. I saw the pic where the set-list is on the side of the bass. And what was Paul thinking? LOL
He just put the complete roll of tape on that list. I guess he was afraid that the set-list was blown away by the wind.
Paul rules.

I was wondering why he's changed his guitar strap from the one that was always attached to the Hofner to a black strap.

I liked the other one!

Because it's the most famous musical instrument in the world and is constantly under threat of theft when Paul isn't touring he leaves it in my closet. Even I can't find it in there.
