Now they are reporting that somebody shot and killed Cecil's brother Jericho today. Mad

Jericho had been protecting Cecil's cubs from other lions trying to take over the his pride, now they have no protection.

How can this be? Was this a local hunter? Did the hunter know about Cecil? Was the kill deliberate, as in bagging Jericho?

Did Cecil's death spark a financial interest in trophies?

If you care to, you can use my avatar for your own as a statement. I will be using it for the next thirty days as a statement. Be aware that I do not own the rights to the image. I hope the photographer/copyright holder will appreciate the exposure!
The photograph is by Brent Stapelkamp and it appears on the National Geographic website.

EDIT: Before you change your avatar, Remember to First Right-Click on you current avatar and Save it, so that you have it to return to later. Otherwise, when you change your avatar, you lose the one that is stored at this website. So if you mean to keep the one that you now use, then be sure to save it before making any changes.

This is my Dropbox link to the avatar of the photograph. If you receive the "New to Dropbox" pop-up, just click on the X in the top right corner to close it. You should then be able to click the Download button in the upper right corner in order to download the avatar-sized image.

Apparently it wasn't jericho but another lion. Oxford said they still have tracking on him. The major news outlets were reporting jericho when it wasn't.

Still so sad about the other lion though that was killed even after the hunting ban was put into place today.

Yes. The hunting ban is a damn good thing, particularly when there appears to be no fencing around that sanctuary, and because of the zeal of certain idiots to abuse that fact.

I want to give the dentist the benefit of the doubt. When you hire guides in a foreign country, you rely on their knowledge and expertise. People tend to believe them when they say something is legal. The guides in this case should be getting most of the bad press.

On the other hand, even a mediocre hunter knows the difference between a threatened species and fair game. No one thinks there are too many lions in the world.

But what an odd mix that is. Someone who, by profession, should be dedicated to preserving the quality of life, and yet he lusts for animal kills. Does he even stay in touch with the world and the events of which he wishes to destroy?

And you are right. The guides are responsible. The facts need to be sorted without persecution.

But then I look at the picture that I am using for my avatar and ask, how important was this kill to him? And why?

Metro newspaper had a photo of Prince Harry with a water buffalo he had shot and killed. The dentist actually did one good thing- exposing a lot more idiots who harm animals purely for "fun".

Ask anyone who has an animal's head mounted on their wall why they have it and they will invariably say it is a beautiful animal. That seems strange to me, but it must make sense to them.

Then they either fear the animal, that they oppose the life of the animal, or find their 'empowerment' as a killer 'beautiful'.

Same Dentist had a sexual harassment suit against him a while back

I'm against trophy hunting. It's no purpose. but I do hate it when animal rights activist let out their sadism in posts about hunters and many have done it on this board (though not in this thread) and have come after me in nasty ways too when I called them out

Guess what? Posting his home address. Threatening to burn his house down.
You are not the better person. Period.

and when it's a female hunter, the sexist comments. the b-word. The c-word. Nobody is calling this dentist the p-word.

the sexism is why I left the animal rights movement.
