Maybe more events will take place, that I couldn't find online... or will be advertised closer to the event time. We'll all have to check our local news media to find out for sure. Wish I could be in Liverpool on June 18th! That's the one I'd like to go to. Smile

I recently got back from a Beatles/British Invasion Festival in Louisville KY (thanks to Nancy R) and lo and behold, my local City (Tampa FL) is having a Paul McCartney 75th Birthday concert at a local Restaurant/Music Venue. How lucky am I!!

It is being sponsored by a Public Radio Station and includes like 17 bands/solo artists as performers. None of these are the same artists I saw at the Beatles Festival which is good in a way. The 5 Day Festival was much more international in scope including the bands.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to tomorrow night. It goes from like 6pm to midnight at a cost (get this!!) of only $12.00

The way they are doing it to prevent song duplications is that each artist picks a year from 1963 to 1976 and performs the songs from that year. Pretty fair way I think to get a broad representative of songs without duplications for a one night concert.

My only frustration is something I have with Paul's own tours. Even the "TRIBUTE SHOWS" think that Paul retired in 1976. Why can't people see that Paul has written so many very good to great songs after 1976.

Unfortunately, Paul does some of that to himself. We are very lucky that Paul has such a love of performing over so many years, but he himself has ignored so much of his Solo career. The only reason that "Here Today" is such a widely known Paul Solo song is that he has performed it (as a tribute song to John) so much on all his tours. Unfortunately so many of his great solo songs are virtually unknown because he has never or rarely performed them. No wonder when Macca Tribute Shows are planned they stop at 1976.

Anyway, I really look forward to this show. It's sort if an abbreviated version of the Beatles' Festival I enjoyed so much last month. Hopefully I will hear a good amount of the deeper Macca cuts rather than just the obvious choices.

For anybody relatively close to Tampa, the Paul McCartney Birthday bash I mentioned above is for:

SATURDAY JUNE 17 -- 6:00 PM TO 12

If anyone is going, let's touch base at the show.

Our radio station in Chicago, WXRT, does a Breakfast with the Beatles every Sunday morning. The host, Terri Hemmert is taking requests & always plays a lot of his solo stuff!

Hi Bernie, that's great you'll get to go to the Tampa event! You'll have to give us a full report on Sunday Smile Wish I lived closer.

That's nice that tickets are only $12! And the format of the show sounds well planned, with each performer/group picking a year from Paul's repertoire of songs.

If anyone is interesting in going, this is more info about the event (from links above):

Just think they are ignoring 41 years of music from him - SMH !!!

Yep, it's his own fault. He doesn't play his own songs so why should a tribute band? If he had played his own solo stuff all along the people would be familiar with them by now.

Hope you have a good time tonight BJ.

Just wanted to give a report from last night's Tampa 75 Birthday Tribute Show for Paul. For $12. it was definitely a steal from a value perspective.

As a whole, the performers were not as accomplished (especially from a "vocal" point of view) as the International flavored bands at the recent Beatles Festival in Louisville KY. You have to keep in mind that this Abbey Road on the River Festival is an annual thing that has been going on for many years and some of those bands make a living doing Beatle tributes full time. In contrast, the bands last night in Tampa were local bands who don't specialize in Beatle/Paul tribute shows. Again, for 6 hours of Paul music at $12.... how can you complain.

Still there were a couple of bands that I thought were exceptional and were as good as many of the bands in Louisville. Those bands were certainly worth the price of admission. The other really positive thing was that they were many "deeper" Paul Beatle and early Solo/Wings songs played. Again, for a real fan like me, it was a very fun evening.

Some of the highlights for me:

*Come and Get It - a real surprise and more Badfinger (and guitar) oriented than Paul's short lived piano take on his song. Loved it in a "informal live" setting and the Crowd really got into it. Everybody knew all the words and were singing along.

*Rocky Raccoon - I think this was the 1st time ever for me hearing "Rocky" live. The singer really did a good job and got the crowd into it. After hearing it, I don't think that Paul has the voice to do it today. Great to hear "Rocky" in this informal setting for the 1st time

*Your Mother Should Know and When I'm 64 - this was an older band (some were my age for God Sake) but the songs sounded real good back to back. The crowd of course was really singing along

*Really good earlier period, deeper cut Paul songs included...Things we said today, Every Little Thing, The Night Before, Tell Me What You See, and She's A Woman. And of course, they did Can't Buy Me Love, And I Love Her and I Saw Her Standing There

* Really good mid period Paul songs...I've Just Seen a Face, I'm Looking Through You, Drive My Car and Good Day Sunshine

* First McCartney Allbum...this Band did a few that I had never heard live like That Would Be Something, Man We Was Lonely, Oo You and Every Night. Another Band also did Maybe I'm Amazed that of course went over very well.

*A female singer/songwriter came out with just an acoustic guitar and did Too Many People and Back Seat of My Car from Ram. Very interesting take and I enjoyed her albeit for just 2 songs. It's a shame that she didn't do For No One and Here There and Everywhere because she had the voice (a la Emmylou Harris) to do it.

*The Band that did the Band on the Run era musically had an unusual flavor using a violinist doing the guitar solo parts in Band on the Run and Jet. It was a very interesting and good interpretation. They also did a nice versions of Bluebird.

*Another one of my favorite bands during the entire evening did some very nice takes on Venus & Mars and At the Speed era hits. They had a female lead singer who had a great voice. They did...Listen to What the Man Said, Let Them In and Silly Love Songs. Really a great job on Silly Love Songs. I could have listen to this lady's voice all night.

As I said, all in all it was a very enjoyable night. I'm more of a purist when it comes to musicians doing Paul songs. Don't mind at all a more "country" take on Paul songs (like the McCartney Solo album set) but they had a "young" band that did a few later Beatle era Paul songs that sounded like the "Sex Pistols meeting Paul McCartney". That was a lowlight for the night for me but for $12. hearing all the good to great other translations was great.

Again, my only disappointment is the fact that they stopped the song selection at 1976. Not a surprise (even the 5 Day Beatles Festival only had a couple of Bands that went into
post Wings Paul Solo stuff) given that it is typical when it comes to Paul. But it was a great night nevertheless and the "standing only" crowd at this small, intimate outdoor venue loved it.
