Last night I watched Paul McCartney Live Kisses DVD for the first time. It was really well done, if you haven't seen it, I recommend it. I liked it for a few reasons: I liked the Black and White filming of it, good choice. With those types of old, golden songs, BW fit perfectly. I like that Mary did his album photo shoot and Stella suggested the video, it's nice that in a way it's a family affair. I liked the intimate setting with Paul. It seemed very laid-back and personal. I liked Paul's voice on all the songs. His voice suited the songs really nicely. I liked Paul's approach to making the album, because so many other artists were doing the same thing, so he tried to make it stand out in his own way. I liked the choice of songs. I had never heard them before (except for My Valentine-and now having heard the whole album, My Valentine really fits in perfectly on the album, like an old classic standard). What I really liked though, my favourite aspect of the film, was Paul's attitude. Paul went on a few times to show how in awe he was to be using Nat King Cole's mic and that he was working with people who knew about this type of music, that he didn't know about. It was endearing to hear him being a little intimidated; he is Paul McCartney, you wouldn't think he would be, but he was. A lot of people don't think Paul is very humble, but he does show that side to him, anyway, I thought he did in the DVD. There was a nice segment of the DVD where all the musicians/producer who worked with him were singing his praises. Of course they would be, it's his DVD, but I thought it was nice to hear because we hear so many stories of people saying Paul is bossy or Paul is an egomaniac or Paul is hard to get along with, and these people who have been in the industry for years (and have worked with a lot of people in the business) say that they had one of the best times working with Paul. I especially liked what Stevie Wonder said, something like 'it's nice to know the guy who you liked so much through his songs, is actually as warm and friendly as you'd thought he's be' And to see Eric Clapton there too, that was nice, since Eric was such a good friend of George and we all know George was very critical of Paul, Eric was supportive and had some very nice praise for Paul too. I also like some moments when he is so down to earth when he messes up his whistling intro and how he got a little emotional singing More I Can not Wish You because he was thinking of his kids (in particular Bea, he said in an interview later) and how he doesn't really know how to end the evening (because everyone kept on clapping) so he starts to say good bye in different languages LOL A great DVD, so if you haven't seen it, you should check it out.
