Since so many of us are, I'm curious as to what our motives are.

I'm also curious as to what kind of veggie you are (plain veggie, vegan, lacto, ovo, etc.) I'm a pesco-veggie (I eat fish, plus the regular veggie diet, but no meat, chicken, eggs, etc)

I am really because of the health benefits. The philosophical cruelty argument has never really resonated with me, probably because I am an ecologist by trade and we, as human animals, fit into the food chain with everyone else. (of course not the extreme stuff like testing bath products on animals, but just the concept of eating a living thing) But the health benefits of vegetarianism are really striking. When you compound that with the terrible treatment of commercial meat, much of which puts consumers at risk, I find the veggie life very superior to a carnivorous one.

For the animals. The health benefits are just a little something extra

I wonder if anyone is going to say just cause Paul is....I never have understood that theory..... : Go veggie cause it makes YOU feel better, if it does indeed.

Because I've always loved animals and as such have never felt happy about eating meat, even when I was very small. About 12 years ago I read some articles in Club Sandwich about the terrible way that animals are transported and treated. That was the point where I decided once and for all to "Go Veggie". I am a plain veggie. As Linda once said, "if it has a face don't eat it".

As for the health side, to be honest that's a bonus but is purely secondary to me, the animals and the quality of their lives, for me personally is far more important

Because I hate vegetables and I want to kill them.

I am not a vegetarian, but I have been trying to include more fruits and vegetables in my diet. I do feel better after I have had a salad and ice tea for lunch.

I don't eat meat because I don't need to kill to stay alive. There's plenty of other food, killing animals for food nowadays is not a necessity, but groundless luxury, quite cruel IMO. I don't care about the health argument, I do it out of compassion.

I've always loved veggies! My parents always thought I was a peculiar child because I'd rather eat veggies than anything else. Never really cared for meat.

                      Hi KimL,

I am a Vegetarian (don't eat fish) because I care about animals. I never liked the taste of meat or fish, which made it easy to give up.

                        became vege in 1993
vegan in 2003 (didn't know until then what was going on in the 'dairy industry'...)

main reason: it's totally wrong and unacceptable to mistreat & murder the animals.

I am a vegetarian because I cannot stand the idea of eating meat...or killing an animal. (I am squeamish just when someone kills a fly)

I don't believe that we should be arrogant to the point of thinking that we should completely control the lives of animals. How they are born, how they live, how they die.
It's one thing if we absolutely have to, it's another when we "just do it".

I am a strict vegetarian (NO animal products, including gelatin). I have bouts of being a vegan...I just have a weakness for cheese.

i know someone mentioned earlier if someone became a veggie because paul was.

i didn't become a veggie because he was one, and i wanted to be more like him, but he did inspire me to do it. after reading his program from the 05 concert tour, with the ad for PETA, i started researching vegetarianism. i felt as if the wool had been pulled over my eyes for so many years, and i really wanted to begin to make a difference for those who cannot speak for themselves.
so i've been a practising veg for 2years now, and i love it. i love animals, and could never imagine eating one for the rest of my life.

This is a very interesting page to read. I am a vegetarian because the thought of eating a dead body makes me sick...

Because animals are not ours to murder.
And the way the animals are treated and slaughtered, just so humans can eat, is really revolting.
                                I'm actually a vegan. (:
Cruelty isn't acceptable in any form.

I've always loved animals. As a child, I was always brining home strays - "He/she followed me home. I promise I'll take good care of him/her."

Plus being veggie is a much healthier lifestyle.

And I'm completely against hunting & killing animals for sport or any other reason.

Because I don`t want to be a part of cruelty. I`m a vegan.

No offense, KimL, but, if you eat fish, you are not a veggie of any sort.

but nature cruel isn't it? I had a fawn taken by a cougar or linx's the other day in my yard. Not to say it not unsetting but it nature's way.

If man/woman lived on veggies alone than explain how they survive in winter. I think it a choice but hardly saving the world from cruelty.

Did I say I was saving the world from cruelty? I`m just trying to reduce my contribution to it.
I only eat veggies (and anything else that doesn`t involve killing an animal) and I`m still here.. I`ve "survived" 27 winters now! Yes, nature is cruel, but it`s only humans that run factory farms.

It is really sad to see so many farms being taken over by huge corporations & "Cookie Cutter" housing built on the land.

yes thanks to the cookie cutter farmers markets.

I talking growing your own. If you only ate veggies and lived in Iceland you be pretty hungry comes December.

I agree it a more humane life style and salute those who are disciplined enough to stick too it. Its healthier for sure.

I wouldn't want the job of killing the steaks in the super markets but I think they way they kill animals is less painful than the way a cougar would ..

My oldest and best friend since we were 8 is coming to stay with me. She been a Vegetarian since we were about 16( I traveled a year with her in Africa and didn't miss eating meat but lots of East indians there plus no money to eat). Any one have a suggestion on what to feed her. I was planning fish but I see that's breaking the Cardinal rules.
