Do you have people around you mocking you for being veggie? How do you deal with their ignorance? Have you experienced disrespect or even discrimination on the basis of your animal rights beliefs?

Junk:Do you have people around you mocking you for being veggie? How do you deal with their ignorance? Have you experienced disrespect or even discrimination on the basis of your animal rights beliefs?

I'll deal with persecution in many areas of my life from my spirituality, my size, my relationships, my choice of dress and body image, my religious practices, my choice in entertainment.

I've got this attitude that my friends tell me comes from growing up emulating Rock Stars and listening to Rock and Roll. I don't give a rat's behind. I just keep on rolling. (sometimes giving them a middle finger as I roll on by).

The best example is living well. (and not being a douche)

I have had a somewhat hard time being a vegetarian, then recently a vegan, as I feel so badly 4 those calves who are murdered as they drink too much of their Mother's milk.
At first I felt like I had to hide it from my friends, as where I live everyone loves meat and no one even thinks about what animals endure to provide these people with what they like to taste. Then I felt defensive and felt out of place in most social situations as the host/hostess of the party did not have vegetarian/vegan meals at all. I would pick around on vegetables and such to pretend like I was eating. Now I have come to a plan where if I know I shall be at an event with no veggie options I will bring my own meal. My friend had her daughters 2 year old birthday party a few months back and before hand I picked up a veggie sandwich and a power smoothie. I sat and ate with everyone, but it was my meal, and it brought a pretty decent, civilized discussion on why I don't eat meat. I feel so liberated from the shackles of pretending for the sake of others to conform to meat eating. Yes, I will continue to be judged by others who love bacon flavored drinks. no lie!
But I have chosen this path and I love it.

Kittay, you're doing what I used to do. I used to bring my own food in a plastic container that fit in my purse. Most are used to people doing it now with allergies and gluten-free issues, but it seemed to spark more civilized discussions about dietary choices rather then debates and sparring.

In science fiction circles, I called it my Alien food. One thing I liked about hanging out with hippies....veggie food was always an option.

I don't appreciate being terrorized into being a vegan by fanatic control-freak types. I have a hard enough time sustaining being a semi-vegetarian, but I really try in phases, and to be excoriated and vehemently scorned for my unsatisfactory incomplete efforts is a real turn off. Because it's the best I can do, so far.
I thought I wouldn't mind being "brain-washed" by those types into doing the right thing but found that their methods put me off. Paul and his Meat Free Monday campaign offer a kinder, gentler alternative to terrorizing fanaticism. I noticed that lately Paul Mc. is speaking up on behalf of a suffering elephant--his love and concern for animals is truly touching, and inspiring.

I know how you feel, Suzy. It was the attitudes that really turned me off. (I only eat pork out of defiance to religions that abused me as they all hate pork).

No matter what my efforts were, they were never good enough. (one vegan ended up wearing my spaghetti 30 years ago when I bought the same noodles he always ate and he asked me how do I know there really aren't eggs in it even though the label reads 'vegan'?).

and having been a vegan and gone back mostly due to the mentality I encountered, that makes me even more of an evil.

Yes, MFM is a better way. try doing it for a day. (Except for Stella's comments on its launching).
WOrks more then badgering people. Most of my friends don't eat meat with every meal anyway either.

I don't mock them but have had many spiritual battles on the subject.
Sometimes I get scared the animals have disguised themselves as people and are after me now. even when I am a practicing vegate.

I take back some of what I just posted, Paul was the one person that I slammed.
I don't want the act that I just found out I am diabetic to be my excuse, but it is my only one. I was under the delusion that someone was out there claiming to be me on my facebook and they know him and I said stuff I probably wouldn't have normally said. You know since somebody else claimed to be Patty. As long as "they" get in trouble not me.

butterpie:I take back some of what I just posted, Paul was the one person that I slammed.

                        Hi butterpie,

I don't have FB anymore as people do hack into your accounts. I was even notified by FB as to the exact city and state where the hacking was occurring. You are not delusional, the people who are messing with your stuff are delusional.

Somebody even hacked my cell phone. They sent me a text and I lost service. By that time there was a policeman talking with me. I told him I wasn't even going to try and fight it. He carried on about my facebook too. Apparently a friend since second grade hasen't been a friend for a long time. I tell you what money can't buy love but it sure will buy you some enemies.
Well that it totally off subject anyhow.
I don't think its anything to condem a person for though, being a vegatarian is actually noble and hard.

No, not off subject as it is talking about 'mocking and ignorance.'
Yeah, I know personally about friends being paid off to be enemies.
I just hope they thought out their plan thoroughly and saved some of that money for
bond/bail if they can get it, as it is a Federal Crime to mess with a Fed. communication device such as the computer and phone, etc...
They say the conspiracy to cover a crime is bigger than the crime itself.

As far as being a vegetarian/vegan...it is very good to cleanse the body and mind.
                            That is just my experience.

Yes, the bingo joke posted above by Rahil is so true.. Funny that after so many years of vegetarianism - i still sometimes face big portions of those "arguments".. funny and sad..

                                  indeed..

oh, worse yet are fake 'vegetarians' who keep 'kissing up to' animal-eaters about 'personal choice' and such copouts, just to 'fit in', instead of firmly standing up for what is right in the face of being a minority.

so much so that such 'vegetarians' would actually side with animal-eaters to try to ostracize vegans.

and who suffers? the innocent animals.

No. It's that they learned about Self-Righteousness, the most dangerous force on the planet. and won't feed into it. that's not just to 'fit in'. it's about stopping a deadly force.

those that feed Self Righteousness are on the side of desruction. Plus, it doesn't convert people. in fact, being self-righteous, telling people who their friends can and can't be, shaming them not only never works ever, but has the opposite effect. it drives them away and turns them off.

Einstein said the mark of insanity was to keep doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.
