Kathryn O:No. It's that they learned about Self-Righteousness, the most dangerous force on the planet. and won't feed into it. that's not just to 'fit in'. it's about stopping a deadly force.

those that feed Self Righteousness are on the side of desruction. Plus, it doesn't convert people. in fact, being self-righteous, telling people who their friends can and can't be, shaming them not only never works ever, but has the opposite effect. it drives them away and turns them off.

Einstein said the mark of insanity was to keep doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

      Self-Righteousness and Destruction huh?
there is NOTHING Righteous about killing and eating animals.
it is very righteous to not kill and to not fund and eat of that murder.

righteous behaviour and lifestyle is certainly better than blatant non-righteousness, especially what so much is at stake.

so that repeated cry of 'self-righteous' can never bring down the facts of the matter or change the reality that killing and eating animals is evil and degraded, and harmful in all ways.

This meat-eating destroys everything. Destruction is all that it causes.
Destruction of animals' lives, Destruction of the planet, Destruction of oneself, etc.

      http://www.peta.org/issues/animals-used-for-food/meat-and-environment.aspx

      Meat and the Environment
"Would you ever open your refrigerator, pull out 16 plates of pasta, toss 15 in the trash, and then eat just one plate of food? How about leveling 55 square feet of rain forest for a single meal or dumping 2,400 gallons of water down the drain? Of course you wouldn't. But if you're eating chickens, fish, turkeys, pigs, cows, milk, or eggs, that's what you're doing?wasting resources and destroying our environment.

A recent United Nations report concluded that a global shift toward a vegan diet is necessary to combat the worst effects of climate change. And the U.N. is not alone in its analysis. A staggering 51 percent or more of global greenhouse-gas emissions are caused by animal agriculture, according to a report published by the Worldwatch Institute. Researchers at the University of Chicago concluded that switching from a standard American diet to a vegan diet is more effective in the fight against climate change than switching from a standard American car to a hybrid. And a German study conducted in 2008 concluded that a meat-eater's diet is responsible for more than seven times as much greenhouse-gas emissions as a vegan's diet is. The verdict is in: If you care about the environment, one of the single most effective things that you can do to save it is to adopt a vegan diet."

      Why be Vegetarian?

There are so many good reasons for being veg{etari}an (health, animals, the environment) that a better question might be, "Why NOT be vegetarian?"

      When you can easily...

      significantly improve your health,
      dramatically reduce your environmental footprint,
and greatly lessen the suffering of animals
...lets ask instead, "What's stopping you?"

Of course, the decision about whether to become a ?veg? is a matter of personal choice..

But; if more people really knew how bad meat is (for them, the planet, and the animals), more people would make the choice to go meatless

      Improve your health

The medical evidence is clear, consistent and overwhelming..

      Vegetarians and vegans:
are far less likely to get cancer, heart disease, diabetes, or osteoporosis
are far less likely to be overweight
      have lots more stamina
consume far less pesticides in their food
      have superior immune function

The largest epidemiological study ever conducted (the China-Oxford-Cornell Study) found that those eating the amount of animal foods typical for Americans have seventeen times the death rate from heart disease, and, for women, five times the rate of breast cancer, than those who get 5% or less of their protein from animal foods
Meat contains 14 times the amount of pesticides as plant foods, since pesticides get concentrated as they move up through the food chain, and since they're more easily stored in fatty tissues.. In 1980, six years after the pesticide dieldrin was banned, the USDA destroyed two million packages of frozen turkey products contaminated with dieldrin.. (And such contamination can routinely occur without detection.) In 1974, the FDA found dieldrin in 85% of all dairy products and 99.5% of the American people.. The EPA discovered that the breast milk of vegetarian women contained far lower levels of pesticides than that of average Americans.. A study reported in the New England Journal of Medicine found that "The highest levels of contamination in the breast milk of the vegetarians was lower than the lowest level of contamination?(in) non-vegetarian women? The mean vegetarian levels were only 1-2% as high as the average levels in the U.S.."

      Prevent cruelty to animals

Nobody wants animals to suffer, but it's easy to forget that when we eat them, that's what we're supporting.. The easiest action a person can take to reduce animal suffering is to simply stop eating them..
Around eight billion animals are killed for food every year in the U.S.. alone -- a number greater than the entire human population of the planet.. Each meat-eating American eats the equivalent of about 24 animals per year.. What's worse, modern agricultural methods mean that animals are raised in cramped confinement operations instead of the pastures from childhood picture books -- a practice known as factory farming...

Chickens killed for their flesh in the United States are bred and drugged to grow so quickly that their hearts, lungs, and limbs often can't keep up..

For some, vegetarianism and veganism are easy ways to refuse to participate in this cruelty!

      Save the Earth

Eating vegetarian saves more land, energy, and water than any other choice you can make.. That's because livestock eat several times more grain than they produce as meat..

      So raising livestock uses:
several times as much land to grow the grain to feed them
several times as much energy to harvest the grain and transport it
several times as much water to grow the grain and to water the animals
several times as much pesticides, etc..

Worldwide petroleum reserves would be exhausted in 11 years if the rest of the world ate like the U.S.. The least energy-efficient plant food is 10 times as efficient as the most efficient meat food.. A nationwide switch to a pure vegetarian diet would allow us to cut our oil imports by 60%

Over half of the water used in the U.S. is used to grow feed for livestock... It takes 100 times as much water to produce meat than to produce wheat.. The water required to produce a day's diet for a typical American is 4,000 gallons. (It's 1,200 for vegetarians and 300 for vegans..) Compared to a vegan diet, three days of a typical American diet requires as much water as you use for showering all year (assuming you shower every day)..

U.S.. Livestock produce 250,000 pounds of waste per second -- 20 times as much as humans.. A large feedlot produces as much waste as a large city, but without a sewage system.. Animal waste washed into rivers and lakes causes increased nitrates, phosphates, ammonia, and bacteria, and decreases the oxygen content.. This kills plant and animal life.. The meat industry account for three times as much harmful organic waste as the rest of the industries in the U.S.. combined..

It takes ten times as much land to produce food for an average American compared to a pure vegetarian... An acre of land can produce 20,000 pounds of potatoes, but only 165 pounds of beef. In the U.S., 260 million acres of forest have been destroyed for use as agricultural land to support our meat diet (over 1 acre per person) Since 1967, the rate of deforestation has been one acre every five seconds.. For every acre cleared for urban development, seven acres are cleared to graze animals or grow feed for them..

Around 85% of topsoil loss is directly associated with raising livestock.. The USDA says crop productivity is down 70% as a result of topsoil loss.. It takes nature 500 years to build an inch of topsoil..Vegan diets make less than 5% of the demands on the soil as meat-based diets.."

        .

No, self righteous behavior is not better. why? BECAUSE IT FAILS TO HAVE THE DESIRED EFFECT YOU ARE STRIVING TO ACHIEVE. In fact, it does the opposite. It drives people from even considering your message in any form.
Does anybody listen to your ranting? Had it effected anybody in a positive manner?

It's not working. Another method must be utilized.

and evil is only as evil as it's perceptions. I've met religious folk who think it's ok to burn down dr's offices because of evil things going on in there...dispensing of birth control. etc. Is it good or evil?
        Depends on your views.

No, self righteous behavior is not better. why?

i said RIGHTEOUS behaviour and lifestyle is certainly better than blatant non-righteousness, especially what so much is at stake.

i never said anything about 'self-righteous' being justified. all i said (as many other times when you throw that phrase into a thread) is
"so that repeated cry of 'self-righteous' can never bring down the facts of the matter or change the reality that killing and eating animals is evil and degraded, and harmful in all ways."

jump high or low, killing animals is wrong and evil and detrimental to EVERYONE and EVERYTHING. the facts are there, and for those who have a heart and a little compassion, all these facts and justification AGAINST MURDER OF INNOCENT ANIMALS would not even have to be battled time and again to be convinced.

please stop funding the killing the innocent animals.
          be righteous.
          thank you.

To be honest, I've seen you demonstrate little heart or compassion yourself.

            Physician, heal thyself.

and in saying righteousness is better, you are justifying it. I stated before. I left the vegan movement because I found the self-rightousness destructive for the entire world. and the original message has long ago got lost.

You think someone like me can't stand up to being shamed? Ha ha ha ha ha

as stated, learn a constructive new technique in communicating and converting others. For you, it'll be a path of self-discovery

Ok, i have a slight problem with the term "self-righteousness" - no idea what exactly it might mean - but in any case i've never seen (at least in Central and Eastern Europe) a meat-eater being a subject of discrimination or mocking or uncivilised propaganda - in my experience it's actually the other way around - the pressure is still more on us veggies.

Kathryn O:To be honest, I've seen you demonstrate little heart or compassion yourself.

if that's the case with me, i wonder what observers would say about you, one who pays for the killing of animals..
the most non-compassionate demonstration is to knowingly pay for murder of innocent beings.

                Kathryn O:
and in saying righteousness is better, you are justifying it.

i think you don't know the meaning of 'righteousness' to be shunning it so openly and repeatedly.
                be righteous.
                it is right.
                do right, be righteous.

                Kathryn O:
I stated before. I left the vegan movement because I found the self-righteousness destructive for the entire world. and the original message has long ago got lost.

and as i stated before, several times, veganism has nothing to do with any 'movement'. it is about having a heart and respect for the lives of innocent animals who have a right to not be abused and murdered.
it has nothing to do with any personal issues and problems you may have had (or rather, more likely, that people have had with you), so keep that out of the real issue of INNOCENT ANIMALS BEING MURDERED.
                THAT is the issue.
                nothing else.

being vegan is about being against this unnecessary, unbridled murder..

                Kathryn O:
You think someone like me can't stand up to being shamed? Ha ha ha ha ha

ok, no idea what that is supposed to mean, so i'll bypass it.

Kathryn O:as stated, learn a constructive new technique in communicating and converting others. For you, it'll be a path of self-discovery

                and what's your excuse?

please stop contributing to the destruction of animals, people, and the planet (which includes yourself).

                thank you.

This chart really needs "I'm going to eat twice as much meat to negate your efforts"

It's horrible, gross and pitiful, while cooking meat, to see the blood, have to smell it and sometimes get some on you--but people I cook for usually want some kind of meat

even more horrible for the animals to have to shed said blood by violent force to begin with...

the animals being cooked wanted their meat also - in their bodies, while alive...

Junk:Do you have people around you mocking you for being veggie? How do you deal with their ignorance? Have you experienced disrespect or even discrimination on the basis of your animal rights beliefs?

I show anyone that doesn't understand my vegetarian lifestyle respect for their beliefs while upholding my own. I don't have time to argue with people but I have family and friends thinking they need to make "special arrangements" for my meals or advising what I can and cannot eat. I guess this would be ignorance as that is what I mostly am faced with.

This is why I dread the holiday season :

Sometimes I stay quiet, but other times I have to be rude or vocal when it interrupts my actual meals.

I have spit out food into napkins with dinner guests around and if they see it, I don't apologise, I explain why I can't eat what was given to me "by mistake". I send dishes back at weddings with everyone at the table fr eaking out, either apologising or being overly concerned I can't be discrete with the waiter so I have to draw more attention to my dinner.

I deal with the ignorance by just getting more practise in these public dining situations. I guess I'm an old pro now
