"World Without Love" demo discovered
-
Peter Asher reportedly has acquired a copy of Paul's demo of "World Without Love" and will be playing it at his presentations. Hopefully he will be joining The Fest again this year. http://www.thebeatlesrarity.com/2013/01/18/world-without-love-legendary-1964-paul-mccarntey-demo-found/

Taken from an NME interview in the 1960's: Paul: 'I was lucky enough to get ten bob a week pocket money - but it didn't go far. If I was taking a girl to the pictures I had to work it out exactly - 3d for the bus from my house to the pictures, 2s 6d each to go in, and about 2s for ices or nuts and a packet of ciggies. I use to walk home if I didn't have enough left for the fare. But I never minded that. I wrote lot of songs on those walks home - "World Without Love" and "Love of the Loved" included."

If this is Paul's demo, shouldn't Paul have it?

Yeah, I am curious about its provenance and what the legal status of the recording is.

IF Peter Asher has the DAT recording, most probably Paul has the original reel somewhere in his possession. If Peter's -playing it in public, you'd have to assume he contacted Paul, who must have given the ok. I'm sure Peter would have had the courtesy and good sense to have done that. It was after all recorded in the Asher house.

It sounds like Peter had his own reel to reel recorder which recorded Paul singing it to him. Peter had all his reel to reels converted to DAT, and didn't realise he even had it till giving them a listen. I think it is awesome that it exists, and we will get to hear it. It is a rough version, missing the bridge which wasn't finished at the point the recording was made. You wonder what other treasures Peter may have on his tapes. Podgie (I find any newly surfaced recording exciting) Monkey

Apparently Peter Asher found a tape from 1964 of Paul singing this song recorded in the Asher's home. The mysterious part is that Peter found it in LA. LA? Interesting read: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/rare-paul-mccartney-recording-of-a-world-without-love-surfaces-20130118

So, I just listened to the newly available 30-second snippet of Paul's demo for "World Without Love," a song he wrote and, ultimately, gave to Peter & Gorden to record...and which became a huge hit for them in the UK and the States. I've read that John and George laughed hysterically when Paul sang it for them...to consider for the Beatles. Seems the part about "Please lock me away..." got them going. They refused to consider it...probably meaning Lennon. While I see the humor and their (Lennon's) purported reaction, it's a pity, really. It could have been a great Beatles' track. I mean, it's better than, say, "Do You Want To Know A Secret," which they recorded during that period of time. Much preferable to their cover of the show tune, "Till There Was You." I mean, c'mon!!!

Sublime. Paul has a spectacularly rare gift for melody.

If it went #1 for Peter & Gorden, its certainly would have been a huge hit for the Beatles, especially at that time. Isnt it a pity...
