Paul in Liverpool
-
Do you think Paul gives a better show in his home town. I have managed to see him in Liverpool twice. Once at Anfield and at the small Liverpool Accedemy. I have seen him a fair few times in other city's and once abroad. I think he gave more of himself at Anfield. I am not sure if it was emotion ( its wasnt the stadium as its a right dump ) but the performance had a spiritual feeling about it
-
I've seen him three times in Liverpool (Anfield, O2 Academy and Echo), twice in Dublin (The O2 and RDS) and once in London (RAH). The RDS show and RAH shows, although particularly the RDS show, had a real feel of 'this is a travelling show and Paul is going through the motions.' None of the Liverpool shows had that really although the O2 Academy really stands out as the best for me. Interestingly The O2 in Dublin would rank as my second favourite show, above the two Liverpool shows. Paul gave just as much at that show as I have ever seen. That was a really special evening and The O2 Academy only gets the nod ahead of it because of the size.

It's like Springsteen performing in Jersey. Like Billy Joel performing at Nassau Coliseum. They're a hometown hero, and that adds to the mystique of the Liverpool Christmas shows.

I think its the same for any artist and their hometown they give it something more because maybe they feel they still have something to prove to everyone there,dunno.. Of course if we remember Paul got boed at the Echo Arena over the Cilla Black story to me while Paul was going strong that night before that incident he ramped it up several notches after it to give a very special performance,i give that example of a hometown crowd not giving a fig to how big someone is when you go home you go home you accept the brickbats and plaudits that they afford you,and i dont think any artist would have it any other way.

I thought after Manchester 2011, on the previous night, the Liverpool Arena show was not quite, not quite, as good a performance. Granted, the Liverpool crowd was louder and it had Penny Lane and Mull, which MAN did not. Nevertheless I thought Manchester was an astonishing night. Just my thoughts. Anfield I thought was a little flat - perhaps cos we were seated high up in the Kop...rotten seats.

At Anfield I was right at the back of the kop as well worse seats ever and to think I was in a ballot for them shocking but I still loved the gig. The bands before not bad either we enjoyed a sing a long to the sound check while waiting outside in the rain

I wonder if Paul is playing the shows any better or putting more emotion into the Liverpool shows or is it just the fans perceiving this as for them it is special to see him in his hometown?
-
For me the two concerts I saw in Liverpool (Anfield 2008, Academy O2 2010) are my favourite shows. I'm very sorry for having missed the Echo Arena show in 2011 as hearing Mull of Kintyre is my long-time dream and I'm sure that show was a very special one in every way. So yes the shows in Liverpool are indeed all very special.

Yes but as i said it is very special for you as a fan, but is it very special for Paul or is it just another show?

This isn't about Liverpool gigs, but my sister's boyfriend went with me to see Paul at the 02 in 2011. He's never been to a Macca concert before, but even he criticised Paul for saying very insincere and empty-sounding things to the audience. He mentioned that Paul probably says and does the same things at every single show he does and that means that most the time he probably says things for the sake of it, instead of putting real feelings and intentions into his words. I was shocked a first-timer made that kind of judgment. In a way, though, he's kind of right. We've all complained before about the repeated stories and greetings and phrases Paul says (and the setlist, of course, but that's a different story!)

he has a script I saw him in Scotland and something happened with the sound for the opening notes of Venus and Mars and I was amazed he was so flustered by it

I think Paul sticks to the script because of two reasons: -the old showbiz adage: A good show is a good show. -to maintain consistency in case of a scheduled DVD-release Genuine moments do occur in his concerts, but Paul kinda' needs an outline to keep the show's momentum going. He can occasionally get a little long-winded, as evidenced in the unedited concert that eventually became the MTV special, Paul McCartney: Up Close (1993).

I would LOVE to see Paul & Band playing in Liverpool someday.. Hope this dream comes true!

Anyone seen any pictures of Paul serving chips from the food wagon outside the Liverpool O2 gig

If it's 'scripted' then it's not from the heart, it's acting. And, you know, most Paul fans would love to hear his long-windedness. I was listening to the Up Close concert on my ipod this morning and I like to hear his little rambles. It makes him more human and closer to the audience. Seeing Paul come on stage and say "We're going to have a party here tonight" again would just make most regular concert goers roll their eyes. Say something different... say what you're really feeling. Give people an insight instead of the same old stories. I'd love to see some unpredictability.

Have to agree Ive seen Paul over 10 times including the intimate o2 academy show a couple of yesrs back but the Manchester show was just perfect everything gelled and the sound was top notch. Definitly my favorite show so far
