Paul's 80s songs

Underrated, underperformed, and wonderful! ONCE UPON LONG AGO
BEAUTIFUL NIGHT ONLY LOVE REMAINS NO MORE LONELY NIGHTS NOT SUCH A BAD BOY SO BAD -
Love them all!!
-
Isn't Beautiful Night from the 90s? It's the one on Flaming Pie, right? That came out in 97. But good list!

Unless they were referring to the '86 version, which was released as a B-side on one of the Flaming Pie CD-singles.

Yeah, I got confused after reading McCartney wrote it for PRINCESS BRIDE and it was rejected. But yes, it was officially from the 90s!

Nice enough, but Paul was definitely right to shelve it. Ringo's drumming and Lynne's production were exactly what that song needed.

how about the under rated back on my feet?
-
This live version of Only Love Remains is so, so, SO much better than the overproduced version on Press to Play. 9 times out of 10 Paul is best when he keeps it simple.

Spot on. So often (especially in the awful 80's) the overblown production was to the detriment of the song. The songs haven't dated, but the production has.

Paul's '80's output does get a lot of stick, but i think from the onset of his post Beatle career he's just put out too many albums without much thought. I think since Flaming Pie his output in general has been more considered, whether that's just songs come less easily as he's aged or he's come to that conclusion that less is more. I have great fondness for his '70's albums, but most in general are up and down quality wise. I do get frustrated with the medias constant "Paul hasn't done anything good since the Beatles or Band On The Run", but a lot of the time some great songs are surrounded by mediocre ones and they seem to be the ones that get noticed, maybe it's just lazy journalism.

I'm curious: I know that you're not a big fan of Off The Ground. Which albums -- from each decade ('70s through today) -- would you say are the most solid, defining Paul McCartney albums of their time? For me, Flaming Pie is his best album of the '90s. But I have trouble deciding which is his best album of 2000-2010.

Very interesting! That film was hugely popular within my circle of friends in those days.

Yeah, I read Paul wrote ONCE UPON LONG AGO and BEAUTIFUL NIGHT for PRINCESS BRIDE, but Rob Reiner thought the songs too sentimental, and rejected them, opting for Mark Knopfler to score the film. What does he know????
-
Listening to Mark Knopfler's score now...
-
Maybe Macca could re-record his best 80's songs without the awful 80's production for a special album (?).
-
I always liked the theme to Spies Like Us. I remember when it first came out. I've never seen the movie, but I like that theme.
