Wingspan - What if it was a 3-disc anthology?
-
We all know Paul's back catalog is so extensive that if he had chosen to make a deluxe triple-disc version of Wingspan, he could do it. What would the track list look like? Stick to a 79:58 limit (which I believe is the physical limit for a CD). Also, for the purposes of this exercise, try to stay away from personal favourites and focus on songs that were more "prominent" - i.e. singles, charting songs, live staples, or tracks that were otherwise prominent. I'll give it a shot, feel free to tweak my list as needed. Oo You (2:50) Teddy Boy (2:24) Eat At Home (3:23) Big Barn Bed (3:49) Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five (5:31) Mrs. Vandebilt (4:41) Zoo Gang (2:01) Give Ireland Back To the Irish (3:46) Beware My Love (6:29) I've Had Enough (3:05) London Town (4:09) Girls' School (4:3 Getting Closer (3:23) Old Siam, Sir (4:10) Arrow Through Me (3:36) Temporary Secretary (3:16) Here Today (2:29) Ebony and Ivory (3:43) The Girl Is Mine (3:42) Say, Say, Say (3:56) We All Stand Together (4:25) I believe that's 79:36. Obviously in an ideal world these songs would not be put on one disc together but would be interspersed along with the rest on Wingspan. Thoughts?

There's a few I think should be included if there were a third disc... I Am Your Singer Letting Go Warm and Beautiful Just to really cover everything like the other two discs do. I would drop Teddy Boy, Zoo Gang, and Temporary Secretary for these three on your list.

My problem is I forget whats on Wingspan and am too lazy right now to put in a little effort checking up on it.. but I'd yank all the collaborations, E&I, Say Say and the Girl is Mine I could all do without. And could easily do without We All Stand Together. and given my own personal feeling about WingsSpan should contain 'Wings' tracks, I'd actually drop Here today, Temp Sec, and Teddy Boy.. I'll leave on Oo You and Eat At Home just cause they are such good tunes though so that opens up quite a few slots. I'd put in Magneto if its not already on WingSpan.. maybe Get On The Right Thing.. and from Wild Life I'd toss on Tomorrow and Some People Never Know. I like those early wings jams.

Appropriate selections...I know you didn't look, but "Tomorrow" did make the official cut.

I did like the idea for Wingspan, but didn't like the fact that Paul decided to include non-Wings on the compilation. Here's my version of Wingspan Hits & History. I for the most part took all the singles and divided them up between the A and B sides, then added some album tracks that I like. It gives Wings a proper Greatest Hits CD, with only Wings tracks. Wings A's and B's CD1 Wings Greatest Hits Hi Hi Hi My Love Live and Let Die Helen Wheels Jet Band on the Run Junior's Farm Listen to What the Man Said Letting Go Silly Love Songs Let 'Em In Maybe I'm Amazed (live) Mull of Kintyre With a Little Luck I've Had Enough London Town Goodnight Tonight Coming Up (Live) CD2 History C Moon The Mess (Live) Country Dreamer 1985 Love in Song You Gave Me The Answer Venus & Mars/Rockshow Magneto and Titanium Man Medicine Jar Beware My Love Soily (Live) Girls' School Daytime Nightime Suffering Old Siam, Sir Spin It On Getting Closer Baby's Request Mama's Little Girl Get On the Right Thing So Glad to See You Here As for a third disc I'll get back to you. But this covers the Wings period very well

I could get on board with that. Not a fan of IAYS, but the other two are excellent. I know Teddy Boy wasn't prominent, it's more of a recognition thing, I guess, since it was a Beatles demo that got onto Anthology. So I could see dropping it. But damn, i really like ZG and TS. Zoo Gang was a TV theme, so I thought it was somewhat prominent, maybe I'm mistaken. I feel like it's "Oo You pt. 2", it's got such a good groove. And TS is sort of essential as a true representation of what Paul was doing in the 1980 tiemframe. The other songs chosen (Coming Up, Waterfalls) seem to try to whitewash out the experimentation. edit: ...yeah, not Girlfriend.

As you must know, the compilation is "Wingspan" only in name; it was never meant to be all about Wings.

I blame Paul entirely on muddying the waters on this for include non-Wings tracks on Wings Greatest Hits, Wingspan Hits & History, and especially for dedicating Too Many People in 2005 to all the Wings fans. But Wingspan should be exclusive for Wings songs. Hence the name Wingspan.

Yeah, I'm not going to disagree that the collaborations and WAST are subpar, but if the compilation is meant to represent the "prominent" songs that were in the public eye and more memorable to average people, then they have to get serious consideration. I could see dropping WAST and TGIM though, especially since the latter was really billed as an MJ track and was on his album and greatest hits comp. Those two are certainly among the less essential tracks I suggested.

OK, two 80 minute wings CDs kinda means you're compiling half of Wings' recorded output. Seems like overkill. Getting to the point where you're discussing what to leave out instead of what to include!

Oh what could have been... "The amount of vintage footage that we had to work with was beyond belief. The stuff from Australia could have made a four hour documentary because the film crew just shot everything. Early on, Mary and I found a researcher who helped us round up odds and ends from all over the world. We had to get most of the TV stuff from private collectors because the BBC had erased all their old videotapes in order to use them again, if you can believe that. Initially the production unit was enthusiastic about Wingspan being a theatrical release due to the staggering amount of film we had. Paul wouldn't even listen to the idea. I imagine the Broad Street fiasco turned him sour on movies. There was also talk of marketing the project as a multi disc DVD but again, Paul was disinclined. He said he didn't want to do another Beatles Anthology. After ABC came onboard, all other considerations collapsed. They wanted a one shot TV special, and they wouldn't even look at anything over ninety minutes. They kept telling us to edit it down, and we grew more and more frustrated every time we had to make another cut. There were other problems as well. Paul had his heart set on "Seaside Woman" being shown, but ABC in America felt the promo depicted ethic stereotypes - that's the type of mentality we were up against. In retrospect, the DVD could have shown a lot more off cut footage. It could have been a two disc affair featuring a lot of the deleted clips, but that's up to Paul. Maybe someday we'll see it." - Wingspan Director Alistair Donald http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/alistair-donald-comments-on-wingspan.298965/

Just curious, did George really do that, or was it his label? I do remember reading that it wasn't received. It was such a bad idea that I can't imagine it was his idea... but I could be wrong. Anyway, it sounds like I'm in the minority, but I don't think putting Wings and solo songs together on a compilation is some egregious foul or anywhere close to the same thing as using Beatles songs. Mainly, the Beatles were a creative goldmine with a sort of 40/40/20 thing going in regards to the creativity and innovation happening in the band. Even though all the songs under the credit "Lennon/McCartney" have since been sorted out as belonging to one Beatle or the other, they are still Beatles songs. and the Beatles are not one person. Therefore, a "best of Paul McCartney" should never have Beatles on it. Now, you're going to say "Wings were not one person, either!" and that's true, but they were completely Paul's brainchild, give or take a few percent. There is very little difference between the creative composition of a Beatles song and a solo/wings song. This is the same reason we see compilations of Iggy Pop that also have his work with the Stooges, or Diana Ross compilations that have the Supremes, or Tom Cochrane compilations that have Red Rider, or Bob Dylan copilations with Bob Dylan & The Band, or Neil Young compilations that have Neil Young and Crazy Horse but no CSNY (perfect example!) Joe Walsh compilations that have his Barnstorm songs, but no Eagles (another perfect example!) In fact, they were usually billed as "Paul McCartney and Wings"... just like "Joe Walsh and Barnstorm", or "Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes" or "Diana Ross and the Supremes" or "Iggy Pop and the Stooges".

No, his label EMI did this. it was the last lp they released after he left to his own label. and he was quite upset on this. and, it was in 1976. even ringo got his own best of without any beatles tracks though georges solo album was the most successfull of any beatles member by 76.... give me love is harrison solo record....

What about Yesterday or Eleanor Rigby? No other Beatles on those.

More of a grey area, but they're still Beatles songs. I wouldn't start dividing up the Beatles songs into "full band songs" and "Paul only songs" in order to decide what could go on a solo best-of. I don't think this takes away from my point at all.
