Those Cringe-Inducing Lyrics
-
Looking forward to the new album so much. Just hope these cringe-inducing subjects fail to make an appearance in any lyrics Rainbows Puppydog Tails Dustbin Lids Bikers who are comparable to Icons Gods riding around on Swans

Absolutely! Rainbows are terrible subjects for songs:
-
All of Average Person. All of The Girl Is Mine. All of Tug of Peace. All of Little Woman Love. All of However Absurd. All of Great Day.

As much as i love Paul's music his judgement on what songs and lyrics are up for public consumption is very inconsistent indeed. Fans will always love different lyrics and songs, but there's some in Paul's canon that no sane individual could love and the Driving Rain chorus is one such, bloody appalling. I think when Paul marries a great melody and lovely lyrics he's the best, but too many times his standards have slipped over the years and a great tune has been marred by substandard words.

LOL. Biker Like A Icon is one of my gulty pleasure songs.

One of mine, too. "Only Mama Knows" somehow feels like almost a sequel to this to me. Really, he has a bunch of songs about loners and misfits out traveling somewhere.
-
Ebony & Ivory! The lyrics are beyond saccharine & trite, and the use of piano keyboards as a metaphor for racial harmony is absurd.

This is also the man who wrote "One And One Is Two" in the early sixties!
-
A couple of his lyrics make me cringe just because they're uncomfortable reminders of how rich and famous he is: "Even if I get a medal from my local neighborhood" "The chef prepares a special menu for your delight" Glad you're enjoying all that, Paul!

I think that first lyric was in tribute to an actual medal he received recently (if not his knighthood than it was some other award) And the second lyric was in reference to the lead character in Vanilla Sky, who was filthy rich (even more so than Paul at least at the time it came out lol)

I've always thought the Driving Rain chorus is rather charming. It's not trying to be profound, fer chrissakes. I do think the live version on Back in the U.S., which has something of a call-and-response feel, works better than the original. For my money (cue the howls of anguish), the lyrics of Long Haired Lady or The Back Seat of My Car are vastly more cringe-inducing. No accounting for taste.

I don't know but that song really was the best and Paul considered it a throwaway Black Yellow Green Red/ can I take my friend to bed?

Back Seat of my Car I wouldn't say made me cringe....because for some reason I thought it was a tongue in cheek parody of a 50's dating song......now if he really meant it, I'd be embarrassed.....
