Ringo Versus Pete - No Contest !
-
This "argument" has always baffled me . The audio evidence to my ears is irefuteable, yet people periodically come out with questions like - " what was the real reason why Ringo replaced Pete? Why is this a percieved mystery, when Sir George Martin ( a highly qualified musician) has always been perfectly clear as to the reasons Pete was replaced. Moreover, If you don't trust the opinion and judgement of the great Sir George, all you have to do is listen to Pete's drumming with the Beatles ! Firstly Pete's version of Love Me Do . It's all over the place ! Even if the arrangement was down to all the Beatles , the uncertainty of the playing is obvious. The tempo is inconsistent , and it renders the band rudderless. You then have to listen to the Decca Sessions , and the Sheridan tracks. From memory , I think Pete plays the same semi-quaver single stroke roll fill on the snare drum on almost every song I watched a clip of a documentary on the subject.A fellow musician from Liverpool talks about Pete's use of the Tom Toms ! I can't ever remember him even using tom toms on any of the Beatles recordings... This is not a character assasination of Pete. I've met him twice, and he's a lovely guy , but I just can't understand why some people can't appear to see the forest for the trees ! Can anyone on here honestly imagine Pete playing on "Strawberry Fields" or "A Day in The Life" ?
-
I think the real reason was a combination of George Martin's opinion and the fact that John, Paul & George liked Ringo better as a person and got along much better with him than with Pete, who was always a loner and as John said "He just wasn't a Beatle."
-
My point is , that you don't need to look for "other reasons". Ringo's superior technical ability was there for all to hear. Paul for one, would always strike me as being more worried about Pete's lack of musical ability than his personality . The other theory about the rest of the band being jealous of Pete's poularity... the thing is , that might have had more credence if there wasn't an issue with his drumming. Ringo managed more invention in his ist 6 months recording with the Beatles than Pete ever did. I listened to Ringo playing on the Beatles version of "How Do You Do It ?" Already a really creative part. Imagine substituting it with Pete going - boom chang boom chang coca cola coca cola coca cola coca cola ...

I hear this question sometimes it always bothers me. Obviously you can't but that's because we're dealing with a Pete who didn't grow and evolve musically with the others from 1962 to 1967. Musically can we imagine any of the Beatles from 62 playing and writing as they did in 1967?
-
stuartshire, Hi!I never believed it was mostly personality, either. Your theory holds water, if you ask me!

Agree totally with every sentence Stuartshire. There is no way on God's Earth Pete is or would ever have been a better drummer than Ritchie! Witness the Anthology Love Me Do, and witness the Decca audition... And witness this...so one dimensional. So one dimensional...
And I met Pete in Melbourne, and he seems a lovely bloke, but... -

This is the best of the lot: Come Together with Pete Best
But in all honesty....he wasn't very good, his personality didn't mesh with the others, he refused to change his hair. He seems like a good guy but people forget he was only in the band as a matter of convenience: they were leaving for Hamburg in 2 days and needed a drummer who A) had his own kit, and B) wasn't in a band already. The fact that they'd have a readymade home base (The Casbah) to play at helped. But once they met Ringo and he sat in with them several time and the personalities clicked, it was only a matter of time... -
Pete was too good looking to be in The Beatles. The other lads were jealous he would take the attention away from them & their music. So, he got sacked.
-
There is an entire series of the fake Pete Best recordings. "The End" is hilarious if you have heard the others first.

Oh yeah, that was the reason. :

That's one of the popular theories. All will be revealed next month in Mark Lewisohn's book... "Pete was told why he was sacked, he knows why. Even though to this day he maintains he has no idea..." - ML
-
I wouldn't be surprised to read he was sacked somehow because of the hush-hush Mona/Neil tryst and imbroglio. I'm a hundred times more excited about Lewisohn's first volume than I was about The Beatles Anthology! And God knows I was excited about that!!!

I made the mistake months ago of listening to those all at work...I had to stifle my laughter and hide my tears while my coworkers gave me weird glances. I think the Mona angle plays into his sacking, too. Not only her and Neil, but the fact that she'd be sort of managing them before Brian came along and there was bound to be a power struggle, especially once things REALLY took off.
