Return To Form!!
-
Once again the reviews seem to be saying that this is a return to form for McCartney. Is it me but have all these magazines over the past two decades said that Flaming Pie, Driving Rain, Chaos, MAF and Electric Arguments were all Returns to form. When are they going to accept that this guy has been consistently good since 97!

Sounds more like a case of the magazines constantly returning to form in that they tend to write the same things about him and echo comments across the years. I think a number of them have no true appreciation for most of what he has done for all these years.

Yes, because they don't even remember those albums. They listened once so they could make some lazy comparisons to old Beatles and Wings tunes, and then they completely forgot about them.

I'm going to guess most of these people are accepting the party line that Paul hasn't done anything since, now BOTR. It would be nice to hear someone review the album that actually knows Paul has barely missed since the late 90's. Or maybe by returning to form they mean having a real hit album, rather than an album that peaks it's first week, then goes away.

Most magazines have said the same thing about Elton John's new album The Diving Board, but they said similar things about his last album The Captain And The Kid.

I remember reading review that TOW was a return to form - lol.

Actually, Paul has been on a roll since 1989. FLOWERS IN THE DIRT and OFF THE GROUND can compete with any of his output since those two recordings.

AGREED! With the exception of Driving Rain which overall has never really gelled for me.

I too agree. I think Paul has been making consistently good albums since Flowers in the Dirt. Patrice, I know there seems to be a 50/50 divide on Driving Rain among fans and I respect your opinion, but I quite like it. The album is probably too long but I love Paul's bass throughout and there are quite a few good songs on it. PS Patrice, I took my daughter on an Alaska Cruise about 15 years ago. We stayed in Vancouver for several days and we loved the area. Went to Vancouver Island and all around your beautiful city. We took in a Lilith Fair Concert while we were there and Sara McGlothlin closed the show. It was one of our best trips ever. That's where I fell in love with salmon. Alaska was also spectacular.

This is not consistent, though. Some reviews of Elton's new album have been really negative. And I gotta say, the tracks they played the other day on NPR's "Fresh Air" didn't impress me, and I do like some of Elton's stuff.

Elton's new album takes a bit of getting used to as it's not commercial at all, but repeated listening reveals it to be a good album. I'd never say it's anywhere near his best but it's good. Like Paul Elton's output over the last 10 years plus has been pretty good.

What reviews? I've only seen reviews on the "New" song so far? And yes it's been reasonable well received, this one is pretty interesting http://www.americansongwriter.com/2013/08/track-review-paul-mccartney-rings-in-the-new/ not only for that comment "regardless of what kind of music he makes, he?ll always have a built-in audience and a pretty massive one at that"

Although he has been on form since 1989 if you are not a fan and you buy his greatest hits album All the best. There is no indication you would think he had not had any great songs since 1987. He needs to put out a new greatest hits album Press only love remains My brave face Put it there Hope of deliverance C'mon people Beautiful night Some days Calico skies songs we were singing Magic About you Fine line Never happened before Jenny wren Dance tonight Only mamma knows Mr bellamy Highway sing the changes Dance till we're high My Valentine Cut me some slack Out of sight I wanna come home Whole world Ok others could come up with other track lists, but my point is a lot of the public are not familiar with these songs even a lot of the music critics are not familiar with them. A lot of these are Beatles quality they are good enough the could have fitted onto a Beatles album. It would be an astounding album that even the critics would be hard pressed to find fault with. It would make people take a fresh look at his post 1989 output It is also noticeable that he has hardly any of these songs in his set list, some he has never played live others he hasn't played live in 20 years like my brave face. Again the casual fan at a concert would think he had done little new stuff in 20 years.

Don't think anybody said Electric Arguments was a "return to form."

It was an unexpected dazzler -- just as Sgt. Pepper was.

The UK press certainly said that Electric Arguments was a return to form stating that he should "let himself go" more often and under his own name and not hidden behind the Fireman project.

Hi There B J Conlee, Thank you for weighing in on Driving Rain. After reading your comments I had to go look up the track listing for the album. There are 2 or 3 cuts that I do enjoy but I have trouble even remembering some of the songs that's how infrequently I play DR. I think I remember more of Press to Play than I do of DR. This discussion has made me want to go back and give DR another listen especially to the bass parts that you mentioned. It was nice to hear that you enjoyed your time here on the Canadian west coast! Vancouver has grown up a lot in the past 15 years, much higher density and plenty of high rise condos. Although I can't say much for our architecture the mountains and ocean are beautiful. I have never taken a cruise but if I do, I think I would like to do the cruise to Alaska.

I think Driving rain is totally underated. As said , his bass playing is superb, and "From a Lover to a Friend" is one of his best ballads ever . I also think Press To Play is underated.

I'm pleased to read that this post has got you all debating. Something that may be of interest to you is that i went for a few drinks to my local the other day and one of them just happens to be the Cavern, the perks of living in Liverpool eh!
