"Keep Under Cover" appreciation thread

For me, one of those Macca deep cut gems. (Would've been a very nice entry n the 2nd disc for WINGSPAN.) I remember when I finally got PIPES OF PEACE and being disappointed that the majority opinion was right about that record being one of his lesser efforts....but this was a real stand-out track. In retrospect, I'm shocked he didn't put this out as a single. Real poppy, would've done decent back then. Best song on the album for me. I read somewhere somebody calling this a great ELO track that happened to be produced by one of the Beatles, ironically a group that ELO themselves really tried to emulate. Who else is a fan? (Or who's a hater? SHOW YOURSELVES! )

I love most of POP, including the title song
-
I do love that song, actually! The verses are catchy, and then the "Love, I'm gonna pick you up" parts lift it up to another level.
-
One of the best songs on the album, I agree. Could just about be my favourite from Pipes of Peace. Nice slow start and then gets into it. Love the "Love, I'm going to be pick you up..... " His voice is in fine form, particularly at the end. The "what good is tennis when you haven't got a ball?' could perhaps have been rewritten! I also like 'Through Our Love". At the time, I thought it should have been the first single. And I might be in the minority, but I love Tug off Peace. Again, I love that edge in Paul's voice.

I love "Through Our Love." Just today, I found a "stripped mix" of "So Bad" on YouTube. It's a revelation! Try to find it; his voice is so good on it!

I'm having a lazy Sunday afternoon, so I'll hop on to You Tube and check out later. Right now, I've been compelled to slip on Pipes of Peace.
-
love it! in fact was playing it friday night (jamming along on my bass) and today again! (the whole POP album also haha)

Wasn't it the lyrics that were attacked on this album, particularly coming off one of his very best albums Tug of War? "The Other Me" and "The Man" are prime examples but hey some people may love them. Like has been said even the lesser rated albums contain gems and Pipes of Peace certainly has those. "Average Person" is a guilty pleasure of mine. So Bad is underrated, the titled track was the albums 2nd #1 single (UK Christmas) Say Say Say was a monster hit and one that many non Macca fans remember and Through Our Love is a soaring testament to his loved ones. I quite like Pipes of Peace

I think Keep Under Cover is the best song on POP and a lost single. I do think that it's one of the standouts on one of Paul's weakest and laziest albums.

He got caned for the lyrics, I recall. The critics were not fond of 'dustbin lids'. I whacked it on the player today, and courtesy of headphones and a superior sound system, I was picking up all sorts of sounds I don't recall back then. Lots of 'pepperish' bits and pieces. I have always had a special fondness for this album. Problem is there are only 11 songs, and with one of them being the instrumental "Hey Hey" I guess we're talking more like 10. Whack on another 2-3 killer tracks and this would garner a lot more respect than it does.

If you hear the Tug Of War demos, you have to wonder how some of those songs didn't make it onto this album instead of things like "Hey Hey" and "Tug of Peace" and maybe my all-time least favorite McCartney song, "The Man."

hey! 'hey hey' is excellent! great to jam bass to and as a Trinidadian, it is sweet hearing Paul on a Trini/Caribbean vibe musicially!
-
'Keep Under Cover' would sound great live but the studio performance is clinically lame.
-
Just listened to this song on youtube (for probably the first time since the album came out 30 years ago! ops: ) and I kind of agree with Kestrel. It would sound much better live. I don't dislike the song, I just don't think it's great or superior. I know, I really need to get out my vinyl of this album and listen to it again!

Not over-fussed on the verses but totally agree with 'Love, I'm gonna pick you up' comment - great ending too.

Many overlooked songs on POP...title track (coolest video) The Other Me (very honest singwriting ) So Bad and Keep Under Cover...skip Say Say Say and The Man..I like the cover too

Loved POP album and especially Keep Under Cover & So Bad I this misunderstood lyrics were in The Other Me when Paul sings ' I acted like a dustbin lid' which was. A bad attempt at Cockney rhyming slang meaning ' Kid'
-
POP remains one of the low points of Paul's career. That said, "Keep Under Cover" is tolerable. Not one of Paul's great tunes, by any means, but at least not cringe-inducing like most of the album.
-
My favorite guilty pleasure on POP is Through Our Love. I absolutely love that recording. I really like So Bad and POP. Very good songs, IMO. I moderately enjoy The Other Me and Say Say Say. The Man is repugnant. I marginally prefer Atlantic Ocean. Keep Under Cover is so-so for me. Rest of the album - a little in the weak side.

I think you have to be a solid, convinced McCartney fan to REALLY like this album. It's not my favorite, but it's not one I get very often. And by the way, the Other Me is the standout track, to me. It's a beautiful song. The sad thing is that I didn't realize "dust-bin lid" was a clunker until I saw it on this or some other forum.
