'Road' is the best track from the album 'New'

'Road' is the best track from the 'New' album. It's a masterpiece, and one of the greatest tracks Paul has ever recorded. Sonics, Production, Vocal arrangement, song structure all superb.

I enjoy this track, too. It makes me think of a David Lynch-esque film of travelling down Route 66 with lots of ambience and mystery. I think the melody is quite decent, but....not quite brilliant enough to rank with his biggest songs. It feels like it needs something more. Does anyone else feel like the vibe of this song harkens back to the Rolling Stones' Monkey Man? (Not that that's a bad thing). Personally I prefer it when Paul pulls together a "ballad" of this style, rather than some of the overly-sugary pieces he has done in the past. But that's just me

Uh, no.

Personally like "I Can Bet" more.

Not the best song, in my opinion, but certainly worthy, and a good closing number, not really like any other one he's done, in my opinion. (Unless you count "Don't Stop Running.") I think it's a shame on the deluxe edition that "Turned Out" comes in and spoils the mood so quickly, much as I love that song.

I first heard this at the LA drive-in event, so it was easy to imagine listening to this while driving on a lonely highway. Appreciate's still my favorite, but this is in my top 5 with Alligator, On My Way to Work and Struggle. parlance

I think "Turned Out" is a bad song. Shockingly bad. Still, I'm charmed by its totally Wings vibe. Sounds like a BTTE outtake to me.
-
I prefer "Turned out" to "appreciate" any day of the week. "Road" is a cool atmospheric track. I don't think it's the best one though.
-
Road is my least favourite. For now.

Turned Out sounds like a George Harrison song to me. I don't hate it, but I don't love it either.

'Road' has always sounded like a leftover from the Electric Arguments sessions so to me sounds totally out of place on New. Nice track though, especially with that Pink Floyd-esque throbbing beginning.
-
I just left a somewhat scathing voice-mail at my local indie-rock/Triple A radio-station, asking 'em why in the hell they haven't played anything off of Paul McCartney's latest album. I suggested "Road," by the way.
-
Love ROAD, my favorite track too. Uh, YES !
-
Definitely one of my favorite tracks on the album... I always think about the rooftop preview in NY, when I hear that one... It was Epic as Audi says

"Road" may have a great lyric, but music-wise it's just bland. I much prefer "Alligator". This way or another, "New" does not have any typical mega hit-songs Macca has spoilt us with in all the decades gone.

I disagree. Had they been released in the '70s, New or Everybody Out There would have easily been Top 5 and probably #1. The problem hit-wise isn't the songs, it's the market and radio programmers.

That's just nonsense. There's ageism in music for a start, lack of radio airplay etc etc. Let's say Paul released 'Get Back' as a new song now, or 'Let It Be' etc etc, it would have no bigger chance of being a major commercial success as the likes of 'I can bet' or 'Alligator'.

Not a big fan of "Road". Really wished the album ended with "Turned Out". Sorry, but I skip right over "Road" from "Looking at Her" to "Turned Out".
