USA Today - 5 Day Special Coverage On Beatles
-
Today marks Day 1 of special coverage of the Fabs in the USA Today Newspaper. In today's article, Elysa Gardner lists the 12 Best Beatle Songs (in her opinion) of all time. To be fair to Elysa, she does emphasize that it is an impossible task and it is purely subjective. If someone could do a link on this article, it would be appreciatiated. It would be in the 2/3/14 edition. The national paper doesn't indicate what the next 4 days will be, but it certainly has me curious and I will certainly read everyday. While being a good list, it didn't take me long to disagree with Elysa. Her # 1 is "Ticket to Ride". Although I know that practically any other group would dream to have a song at good as "Ticket", I'm not sure it would make my Top 30 Beatles' songs. Forget being #1, I wouldn't have this single ahead of Yesterday, Here There and Everywhere, I Will, For No One, Blackbird, Something, Here Comes the Sun, Let It Be, Long and Winding Road, In My Life and Help. And these are songs just off the top of my head that didn't make Elysa's Top 12. Anyway, this makes for great discussion which is probably what USA Today wants afterall. Here's Elysa's top 12 list: Ticket to Ride I Want to Hold Your Hand A Day in the Life Eleanor Rigby Norwegian Wood Penny Lane Hey Jude Strawberry Fields Forever While My Guitar Gently Weeps The Fool on the Hill Abbey Road Medley Girl What do you guys and ladies think?

R Martinez, To prove how subjective and difficult this is, your list only has 3 songs from Elysa's list (3 out of 12) and your list is also great. I think we need a Top 30 to make this easier. I'm still thinking about my list but I think "Let It Be" is one that I have to include.

Let It Be Almost made mine, it is such a fantastic tune! I went with Long and Winding Road for emotional reasons, always makes me tear up. But then, Let It Be seems to be a serenade to the Beatles as they were ending. Amazing music!

I like her list, but it's certainly not what I would choose. Except that the Abbey Road Medley is not a song. :

Except that it kinda' is...in my mind....just a 16 minute one! I always vote for it when my local rock radio station asks for your five favorite rock songs of all time....and the Medley always is in the top 100 somewhere. I really have no idea of which 12 songs I would select....well, I sorta' do. But the list would change almost daily. One time someone asked me what my favorite Beatles song was, and that pretty much was my answer: "It depends on the day." Love the USAToday daily story relating to the Beatles 50th. Today, Edna Gunderson lists ten top songs (by them) in 1964 and why they had such impact. (Who else could have a list of ten songs in one year alone!!!??) And there is coverage of how they dressed from year to year and the influence of that along with their music.

And where in your opinion does the Medley start? I think everyone will have a different answer to that.

Beatles4Ever&Ever..I've been wondering why the heck you are putting a smiley face 10 rows down. I cannot see your text at all. I have a black screen (as some do). I just realized this when Randy quoted you.

Good question. Sometimes it is just the "Golden Slumbers...The End" portion, and sometimes it's the "You Never Give me You Money....Bathroom Window and all the way through The End"; the one Elyse Gardner included/wrote about, the 16 minute version. When I request it/vote for it on classic rock, it's generally just the "Golden Slumbers...The End" part, they're more inclined to play that rather than the entire 16 minute-portion. And it does have that great John, Paul and George guitar duel. One can so easily tell who is playing which part. Each has the personality of the person playing whichever guitar.

I'm guessing that with his formatting, using a bigger size, it must force black into the text, rather than letting it default to white on a black screen. (?)

Kind of tricky. I usually just avoid that whole sixteen-minute stretch when picking favorites, although when I used to play in coffeehouses, I would sometimes do just "...Bathroom Window" (but not like Joe Cocker!).

Very interesting!!! You used to play in coffeehouses??? I'm SO impressed. Seriously! Speaking of Joe Cocker, is he still around? One never hears about him anymore. I did like his funky, if that's the right word, versions of both "...Bathroom Window" and "With A Little Help From My Friends", but not as well as the Beatles, of course. His almost out of control style was quite interesting, as was his voice, and that visual with the hands/arms flailing about!!!
