Who agrees with Frank Sinatra?

Best love song ever written...
Not sure I 100% agree (Maybe I'm Amazed is my subjective choice...along with a few others)...but it's certainly right up there amongst the best -
I disagree, but it's up there. And it's probably the best among love songs that Sinatra could plausibly sing.
-
It's as good a love song as any the Beatles ever produced.
-
When Frank says it's "the greatest love song in 50 or 100 years, and it never says, 'I Love You' in the lyric.." Who the hell am I to disagree?!!!

George wrote another gorgeous love song, which for me is right up there with Something. Exquisite melody, exquisite playing, exquisite lyrics and solo... Your Love Is Forever

YES. Just exquisite. Gives me chills. Had this been a Beatles song, it would have been one of their all-time great love songs. That's the only difference between it and "Something" IMO.

Glad you like it as much as I do. I agree. Had this been a Beatles song it would be a classic - sadly not enough Beatle people have even heard it; in my experience, anyway. When I got the album in 1979, it was this song that jumped out at me, I loved it on first listen, and it's still one of my favourite George songs.

Yes, I'm a big fan of that one too. Regarding "Something," I wonder if younger people can relate to the line "You know I believe and how." Nobody really says "and how" for emphasis anymore?I don't think I ever have, and I'm in my late forties. Or maybe younger people just let that line breeze by without thinking about what it means.

Sinatra could sing when he was younger, but he recorded a lot of lousy songs too which to me indicates questionable taste besides Bobby Darin was a better "Sinatra" than Sinatra so I'd respect his opinion more. Something might be a great song for George, but Paul's love songs are in another class first and foremost because of his melodic genius and second because his voice was an order of magnitude better than George's somewhat hollow, shaky voice. As an example "And I Love Her" is a much more beautiful song in many respects than Something. I'm sure I could come up with more examples if I had the full list of Paul songs in front of me. Edit: I was thinking more on this during my commute home and I have the following additional salient points to make: 1. It's not really a proper love song with bittersweet lines like "Don't want to leave her now"...why would he consider leaving her if he was in love? If this is a love song then so is "In My Life" and the later again is a much better song in many way, again with a beautiful Macca melody. 2. This lyric bears the typical Harrison ambiguity "You're asking me will my love grow I don't know, I don't know" a la "If I Needed Someone"--that is this somewhat noncommittal stance. 3. The melody is much better than the lyric. George really always was quite far below the writing level of the Mac/Len "team" and it is all too obvious even when you read the lyrics to one of his best songs. They just don't flow. They almost don't make sense in order to get the rhyme correct. George writes better lyrics as time goes on, but his melodies suffer as he is no longer exposed to Mac/Len and his voice get worse exponentially after the Beatles. I just received the Best Of GH meant for the Russian market and listening to those songs, it's not terribly easy to get through the album without skipping several songs.

Beatles: "All I've Got To Do;" "Here, There and Everywhere;" Sinatra: "All The Way;" Nat Cole: "Fly Me To The Moon;" Jo Stafford: "You Belong To Me;" Elvis: "Twelfth Of Never;" Stylistics: "Betcha By Golly Wow;" First place tie among these, for me. Oh, and "God Only Knows": Beach Boys.

'Something' deserves the high accolades it gets. The song has it all - clever lyrics ("somewhere in her smile that shows me I dont need no other lover.."), catchy melody, soaring chorus...all with about being overly cloying. Perfect love song. Its also tailor-made for Frank. Slow verses followed by a fast "swing" chorus. It doesnt get any better than this, until 'Maybe I'm Amazed' George learned well from Paul.

I agree. I'm not sure it really IS a love song. Where in there does he ever say he loves her? I do love the song, though.

Great! Especially "God Only Knows". My choices would include"Can't Help Falling in Love" by Elvis, "If I Fell" and "Here, There and Everywhere" by the Fabs.

Not to mention "Unchained Melody" by The Righteous Brothers. There's a reason they used it in the movie Ghost - it's unworldly!

I love Clapton's song, too. It's a narrative. I love narrative poems, too. It's not my favorite, but it's in the top five.
