Venus and Mars sold more than Band on the run
-
According to his official site (on the sector Music) the album Venus and Mars has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide and Band on the run sold about 7. About the band on the run, the album sold many more than we think. It sold more than 1.5 million UK and 6 million US but the certificates are out to date. The 1.5 million UK was even noticed on journal. This is according to a biography of Wings called Band on the run.

For band On The Run sales, Wikipedia says UK: Platinum + Silver, U.S.: 3x Platinum For Venus & Mars, it says UK: Platinum 300,000 units, U.S.: Platinum 1,000,000 units These figures are probably out of date, but no way did V&M outsell BOTR.

The only way to fairly judge the popularity of a release is to measure sales surrounding it's initial promotional campaign period. Re-releases should not fairly count towards the popularity of an album or single, as the bulk of releases are not given a second chance. Take for example the biggest selling UK singles of all time - Kintyre is still the biggest selling non charity single, in fact the ones which have outsold it were either charity and/or re-released at least once. During the 70's Wings sold more than The Beatles did in the 60's. The Beatles single releases were all given 20th anniversary release and were heavily re-promoted. So sales to date for each band are fairly irrelevant now as Wings were never given a re-promotion. Anyway, to the point. From PaulMCcartney.com: ''Venus and Mars went on to sell over 10 million copies worldwide'' ''Band on the Run was Paul's fifth album since the break up of The Beatles and it triumphed both critically and commercially. The album topped the US chart three separate times, won a Grammy and went on to sell more than seven million copies. From the recent book 'Band On The Run' Its (BOTR) worldwide sales exceeded 10 million'' Venus and Mars was a massive seller, so it wouldn't surprise me if the sales are pretty much on par with BOTR.

Venus and Mars was released after Band on the run success and Wings getting more and famous and making huge tours.

Speed Of Sound was another MASSIVE seller. It was the 4th biggest selling album of 1976 in the UK (and the 2nd biggest selling all new original album) TOP 1O : Greatest Hits - ABBA 20 Golden Greats - Beach Boys Forever and Ever - Demis Roussos Wings at the Speed of Sound - Wings A Night on the Town - Rod Stewart Live in London -John Denver Laughter and Tears: The Best of Neil Sedaka Today - Neil Sedaka Their Greatest Hits (1971?1975) - Eagles Twenty Golden Greats - Glen Campbell The Very Best of Slim Whitman - Slim Whitman 1975 TOP 1O - V&M is 9th biggest seller (and 5th biggest original album): The Best of the Stylistics - The Stylistics Once Upon a Star - Bay City Rollers Atlantic Crossing - Rod Stewart Horizon - The Carpenters 40 Golden Greats - Jim Reeves 40 Greatest Hits - Elvis Presley Tubular Bells - Mike Oldfield Elton John's Greatest Hits - Elton John Venus and Mars - Wings 1974: The Singles: 1969?1973 - The Carpenters Band on the Run - Paul McCartney & Wings Tubular Bells - Mike Oldfield 40 Greatest Hits - Elvis Presley The Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John And I Love You So - Perry Como Rollin' - Bay City Rollers Greatest Hits - Simon & Garfunkel Old, New, Borrowed and Blue - Slade The idea that Wings weren't big in the UK is absolute nonsense.

Venus and Mars is my favorite McCartney album after he went solo, and my favorite of all solo Beatles albums. Imagine is a close second, except for How Do You Sleep, which I still think was a cheap shot. I'm hoping we see that remaster soon.

Venus and Mars is a terrific album. Paul at his vocal best.... At the Speed of Sound still sits as one of my least favourite, and for one reason only... and I don't even have to enunciate that reason.... Mull of Kintyre was huge. Huge! Everywhere but in the U.S for some reason. Paul was at his peak. On the back of Wings Over America. A simple three-chord song (might've been another in the mix), that was dynamite, but didn't put a dent in the U.S charts.... still has me baffled.... although, I do notice, whilst it is one of the biggest sellers of all time in the UK, it doesn't get much of a go in his live tours.

''At the Speed of Sound still sits as one of my least favourite, and for one reason only... and I don't even have to enunciate that reason'' Speed Of Sound is almost certainly my fav Wings album in terms of songs/production/atmosphere etc. Everyone I've played it to loves it. Can you elaborate as to why it's your least favourite?

Not enough McCartney. He got a little too 'nice' and got caught up in the whole idea that this incarnation of Wings was a "band", and he afforded too many songs to others... I doubt I am surprising you with that summarisation.... That really was, in my opinion, a lost moment for him to really drive home the momentum at that crazy time.

With respect, I completely disagree. Every lead vocal from each member works on this album. Gives it variation and it's immensely enjoyable. Shows off the talents of the band individually and as a collective. I'm a Wings fan first and foremost so that's maybe why I favour the album so highly. It's a real Wings album.

I love this album and I think that the vocals of others members are really great. Denny singing Time to Hide is fantastic and Joe English singing Must Do Something About It is great too. The only music that I don´t like is Cook Of The House. Sorry Linda, love ya´
-
Haha, Cook Of The House is fun, and i think Linda's great on this track.

I know Im off topic like to divide Paul's sale figures original and re-release. Have feeling Ram will be number 1 for the re-release.
