Ringo's Performing Quirks
-
For ages now, Ringo has been singing two of his signature songs differently from the way they were first recorded. On Sgt. Pepper, "With A Little Help From My Friends" starts with: What would you think if I sang out of tune? But now he always sings: What would you do if I sang out of tune? A couple of lines later, the original was sung with a rhythm like: And I'll try Not to sing Out of key But now he does it this way: And I'll try not [pause] To sing Out of key And then, on "Yellow Submarine," the original starts: In the town where I was born Where he now sings: In a town, when I was born Then, in the chorus, the lines were originally sung pretty flat: Yellow submarine, yellow submarine, yellow submarine But now he usually sings that last one with exaggerated up-and-down pitch, like: Yellow submarine, yellow submarine, YEL-low subma-REEN. Does this bother anyone? Can you think of others?

Paul does the same thing, such as changing the lyric in Golden Slumbers from "sleep pretty darling" to "sleep little darling." And in Hey Jude and others, he has to "jazz it up" by singing part of it higher (drives me crazy when he does that!)

Yes, and for a while there Paul was singing "in my darkest hour" in "Let It Be." That one really got under my skin!

During the 89/90 tour as well as the 93 tour, the line that says 'there will be an answer', he always jazzed it up to 'You know there's going to be an answer' (a number of additional words in the same length measure)

Yeah irks me too... That "movement you need...is ON YOUR SHOULDER!!!" and in Let It Be... "Mother Mary COMES TO MEEEEE!!!" ...like some insect has crawled into his shorts and suddenly bit him...

Would you rather have lip-synching? No one can or should even try to sing a song exactly as it was recorded. A recording captures one performance and it's done. But you can never sing a song the same way twice. A good live show has to be a natural performance, not them trying to fake a record. So they put their little nuances into it live, and that's what makes it a good live concert.

Hes a living, breathing, performer/artist....who cares? Changing little words up like that don't change the meaning of the song....EVERYONE does it....it's like breathing!
-
I second the two posts above this one!

It's silly to complain when Paul or Ringo change something when they perform a song live. It would be boring if they chose to perform those the same exact way as they sound on the records!

But he sings those lines in that way most every time!

It must have been "Harold!"

You're right! So now we have to hear (every time) the changes he's made to the original songs. He never varies them. I especially dislike the Hey Jude change ("On your shoulder") I just liked the original way he did it so much more!

Sorry favoritething, I've hijacked this thread to "Paul's Performing Quirks." Carry on with Ringo's.

Haha, no problem. Your point, I think, is relevant to Paul and Ringo when you say that it's fine to vary the performance from the original recording, but to do the same variation over and over gets old. I've seen Elton John several times now, and I know that every single time he does "Crocodile Rock," he'll end it with "la la la la la, OOO YEAH!" I thought about starting a Paul thread on this, but I thought it may have been covered before. I know I mentioned "Band on the Run," where he now sings: "BUT, we're (you're) never gonna be fou-hound, WOH NO!" But since we have a Ringo touring thread, I thought those people might chime in on Ringo!
-
I think Paul's been doing that to Band on the Run since at least the Wings Over America tour - just like on Jet, where (after he sings 'Much Later') he adds that 'Ooh she said....Ooh she said'...that's been for as a long as I've been hearing him sing that song live

OK, I've made a Paul thread now.... http://maccaboard.paulmccartney.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=2772356#2772356
