"Paul McCartney Helps in Rescuing a Temple Elephant"
After hearing from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India about the plight of a young elephant who has been beaten and is kept in chains, former Beatle Paul McCartney broke from rehearsals for his performance at the London Olympics to send an urgent letter to Maharashtra Forest Minister Dr Patangrao Shripatrao Kadam. "I have seen photographs of young Sunder, the elephant kept alone in a shed at Jyotiba Temple and put in chains with spikes", wrote McCartney. "Years of his life have been ruined by keeping him and abusing him in this way and enough is enough. I most respectfully call on you to get Sunder out."

UPDATE: 31st August 2012 http://tinyurl.com/9nx9gma
Following months of campaigning, and tens of thousands of activists voicing their concern, PETA have announced that baby Sunder ? who has been imprisoned since 2005 ? will be moved to a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre near Bangalore.
Thank you Paul and others for taking the time to make a difference!

What an amazing story! Elephants are one of the smartest animals in the animal kingdom and I can't even begin to fathom someone treating one this way. Elephants are my favourite animals and to see Sir Paul looking out for them makes me peachy keen!

"Elephant thought rescued by Sir Paul McCartney found beaten in chicken shack" http://news.yahoo.com/elephant-thought-rescued-by-sir-paul-mccartney-found-beaten-in-chicken-shack-150905876.html
On a trip to India in 2012, former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney was moved enough by the sight of a 14-year-old elephant named Sunder, abused by its handlers at Jyotiba Temple south of Mumbai, to engineer a campaign for the animal's release. McCartney made agreements with Maharashtra State's forest department and Project Elephant, an Indian government organization, to move Sunder to a sanctuary. But an animal rights group's investigation in February found Sunder had simply been stuck in a chicken shack, shackled in chains heavy enough to prevent him from lying down to sleep.

This is so horrible. I wonder what action will be taken next to help this suffering animal and fast.

I just read a horrific story regarding an elephant in India that Paul thought he had rescued. This poor animal is being beaten, cannot lie down & is shackled in the heat. Please let Paul know because there is NO way he would let this happen. http://news.yahoo.com/elephant-thought-rescued-by-sir-paul-mccartney-found-beaten-in-chicken-shack-150905876.html

This is beyond heartbreaking! How could one sleep at night after such actions? Sooooo incredibly sad! I hope someone is very quick in helping this poor animal.

I believe Paul has a bigger voice & heart, than any political individual. I hope he sees this & reacts.

I cried too. I hope all elephants and all animals can be somehow saved from this sick treatment. What happened to Sunder?

^ You're welcome! The video you posted was not loading for me the other night, but I have now had a look - another tragic case. This poor elephant weighing in at half of what he should be...so sad! Let's hope we are able to read of his recovery at some point in the future.

^ I watched the video on Roger sunday morning about 3 different times. It was heart wrenching to see and think about. I hope that he is in a larger enclosure now and putting weight back on.
