"THIS IS FOR THE WINGS FANS"
-
A terribly dismissive comment to make prior to ONE Wings number. Paul plays many Wings songs live, most concert staples. But there are MANY Beatles fans who are WINGS fans. "This is for the Wings fans" means "Here is a morsel for my 70's band." He makes the Wings logo with his hands and off he goes. If Paul won't play a balanced setlist representative of his whole career, how about he scraps the comment that makes it seem Wings and their fans were a footnote in his career. I'm in my bunker so fire away! By the way...he never intros Calico Skies, Flaming Pie etc.... "This is for the SOLO fans...:
-
what's worse is he said that before introducing Too Many People which isn't even a Wings song.
-
As far as Paul introducing Too Many People with the comment regarding the Wings fans...... I think you have to look at it from his perspective. This is just my speculation. But when he was recording Ram he was most likely thinking about keeping a band together. So that was on his mind during most of that recording time. And the very next album was the first Wings album, with several of the same musicians. As fans, to us, it is as we first received it. A Paul McCartney album. But maybe his perspective was very different. Not a big deal.

That statement makes it seem like he things there are about 50 people in the audience who may like his Wings songs- lol. I wish he would introduce his solo songs by saying "this is for all of you who know I still had a career after 1980" - lol. Just teasing everyone - ha ha

All very true. Ram is a transition LP for sure. It's just when he said that I thought Junior's Farm or whatever not Too Many People. A bit disappointing. Paul may also view everything after the Beatles as solo material and not necessarily Wings/Solo like his fans do

Paul and whoever only thinks there are 50 people in the audience wanting Wings songs.

Well...the nucleus of Wings was Paul and Linda, and Ram is by Paul and Linda McCartney, instead of just Paul himself. I think that's why he said that.
-
The nucleus of Wings were Paul McCartney, Linda McCartney and Denny Laine. Those three musicians played on every Wings album. And Denny Laine didn't play on Ram, although he did perform on tracks that had been recorded during the Ram sessions but that's a whole different story !!!

That's your opinion and I see where you're coming from. But Paul and Linda started Wings, not Paul, Linda, and Denny.

I view it the same way you do - pre Wings, I get Paul calling 'Wings' at this point...post Wings would be another matter, although I'm still not particularly put off by that either (remember that songs such as Uncle Albert and Another Day were added to Wings Greatest Hits But in some way, I understand (and in fact, to some degree - agree) with the premise of the OP....at least in general terms in that he's largely neglected that phase of his career during his current day concerts. I wouldn't be shocked if Paul himself actually started telling the old 70's joke 'did you know Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings?' (except in his case, he'd say 'I' instead of 'Paul McCartney'...LOL)[/code]

Wait a minute isn't Too Many People on the Wingspan Hits and History album? Because I remember hearing on there so therefore it's considered a Wings song no?

The album that song comes from (Ram) is credited to Paul and Linda McCartney...but a couple of the other musicians eventually went on to join the first incarnation of Wings....and furthermore, by Paul's own admission, there was already a band in place and it's why he decided to give it a name (I think it was while Linda was in the hospital following the birth of their daughter Mary)...This is why I can see both sides of the argument

No, birth of daughter Stella in Sept. 1971! Mary was born in Aug. 1969 when the Beatles were still together.

The "Wingspan" collection has stuff from "McCartney" and "McCartney II" and "Tug Of War" and "Pipes Of Peace" and "Broad Street" as well. I don't know. To Paul, it seems like "Wings" is shorthand for "all that stuff that came out when I was still having #1 hits."

One theory I have (although it doesn't explain the Broadstreet song inclusions) is that Tug of War and Pipes of Peace were at least in part, rehearsed by Wings and in fact, Denny Laine is listed in the credits on both albums...So perhaps Wingspan is a story of how Wings was born, then later 'died' (not just the bookends of when the band bore the name 'Wings'...but rather when the idea was conceived and later when, not only was the band legally dissolved, but the entire 'ambiance' was purged from Paul's system)

I noticed that too. I wonder if to him, he career is seen as: 1) The Beatles and 2) After the Beatles, with Wings being merely an aspect of that, as opposed to a band unto itself with its own history and successes. In the 70s, clearly he saw Wings as a band on par with the Beatles. Now, he sees it as part of his solo career. As if it was like the band he has now, ie a back up band.

Just my own opinion but I think sometimes we overanalyze things.

Yeah, but that is what happens on fan forums. Pages and pages of opinions about minutiae!
