A Case for Macca's Solo Material
-
I'm 65 years old and when it comes to technology, I am an "old dog, trying to learn new tricks". Anyway about a month ago, I bought an Android Ellipsis 7 tablet from Verizon. It was on a great sale so I decided to try it. I also have an I-phone. As I started to enter various apps to my tablet, I discovered something really nice. I installed the MP3 Music App and to my amazement I entered Paul McCartney's name and discovered a huge library of his music. I then downloaded song after song. It wasn't Macca's complete library but it was quite deep. I just downloaded songs I liked from Macca's Solo career that you never hear on the radio. After about an hour I was already up to over 50 songs. I was also surprise to see several rare songs by Paul not on his personal CD's. How happy I am that I took a chance and bought this tablet. I now play them at home whenever I feel like it. What a treat to hear these songs that I hadn't heard in years. The funny thing is that they sound great no matter what order you use. They are organized automatically in alphabetical order and that is fine with me. I think that something like this just shows how good of Solo career the man has had. And as the years have gone by, the quantity of great songs have just kept growing. I know that I can download another 50 songs and like them just as much as my first 50. Anyway, here is the inititial songs I downloaded. A Certain Softness Ac-Centu-ate the Positive-I know Paul didn't write this, but I love his take Alligator At the Mercy Beautiful Night Daytime Nightime Suffering Dear Boy Don't Let it Bring You Down Early Days Ever Present Past Feet in the Clouds Get Yourself Another Fool --love Clapton's guitar and Paul's bluesyvocals Getting Closer Golden Earth Girl Hope of Deliverence House of Wax How Many People I Do Letting Go (Wings over America) Little Willow Maybe Baby -- From a movie (Paul with Jeff Lynne) killer version Maybe I'm Amazed (from Mccartney Album and best version i.m.h.o. Midnight Special from Choba B Coop (killer vocal from Macca) More I cannot Wish For (one of my favorites from Kisses) Mull of Kintyre My Brave Face My Soul (Nitin Sawhner from the London Undersound CD) One of these Days Put it There She's Given Up Talking Smile Away Somedays Souvenir Summer's Day Song Take it Away The Mess (bonus track on Red Rose Speedway) The Other Me This One Through Our Love Tomorrow Too Many People Too Much Rain Treat Her Gently - Lonely old People Tug of War Vintage clothes Wanderlust What It Is Why So Blue You Gave Me the Answer You Tell Me Young Boy Your Way What a list and this is just me casually downloading a bunch of songs that I liked from the Macca library on this app. I just stopped at some point so I could get a chance to hear them. I will download more in a few days. If anyone objectively listened to these songs, they would have to be very, very impressed and there are plenty more great songs. While I didn't buy this Tablet for this purpose, what a wonderway to hear Macca's extensive library after the Beatles.

A lot of great ones there, B J!
-
When you listen to Paul's material with Wings and as a solo artist it makes you realise what a wide variety of music styles he performs/writes and what a great musician he is.
-
Yeah but apparently all the people that go to his shows don't know or care about that.

And if ever comes back to Australia, it'll be about nothing but the generic hits.... that's just the way it is these days.
-
I'm glad you included 'Why So Blue' one of my very favourites from recent years.

So many wonderful songs and probably just so much fun listening to them. Too bad they will never be heard or appreciated by the "masses".

Stephen, Your're so right. You look at that list (and you can easily come up with another 50) and there is so many music genres that are hit... pop, rock, rockabilly, folk, soul, r&b, country, blues, etc. And some songs have a fusion of multiple genres in the same song. That's what got me hooked along with his voice.
-
What wonderful songs you chose on the list. It's amazing how many songs Paul has written over the past 50 years and it still writing more! He's incredible! The one you added "Put It There" is one of my favorites too even though I love all the songs Paul wrote.
-
That's what I like about Paul McCartney and also The Beatles. The variety in styles.

IMO - Your next batch of songs should include two of my favorite songs from DR, "Lonely Road" and "About You".

______________________________________________________ Yankeefan, Funny you mentioned these 2 songs. I just added them (along with a bunch more) to my Macca library. This App's Library is very deep and I keep on finding more Solo songs. I actually added the "live versions" of About You and Lonely Road. I believe they were on the Back in the US CD. The live versions were as good as the studio in my opinion. The 3rd Driving Rain song he did live was the title track and that was definitely better than the studio. A good friend was with me at the Philly show and he was really surprised how good it sounded. He didn't like the album version of the title cut. This is the tour where Paul should have started to add 3-4 additional Solo songs (on top of the Driving Rain songs). His voice was still very good and as you said, it would have given his live shows so much better balance to his entire career. That tour and the ones that followed would have allowed audiences to hear great songs from Tug of War, Flowers in the Dirt, Flaming Pie, Back to the Egg, Londontown etc. It is a shame that the masses don't know the best songs from these albums.

I have always thought Mr. McCartney's solo work has always sounded better live, especially DR and FITD.
