Beatles last Ed Sullivan appearance - Mar 1970 Two of Us?
-
Why in the world would Sullivan show a clip of Two of Us, as it wasnt even a Beatles single? The logical choice would have been to promote the Let it Be single. Who was running the show at Apple in the Spring of 1970?!? Klein had no clue what he was doing & John/George/Ringo wanted him as manager??
-
He also played a clip of "Let It Be," which was their current hit single, on that same show. I know because I watched it way back when. So the clips were the current single and an album track from the new album -- pretty typical, I'd say.

Can't argue with that!

I think the Beatles were busy with other, more pressing things in the Spring of 1970. Like breaking up.
-
They were defacto already broken up by then, though Paul's announcement was in April. But the Let It Be album and movie were just about to be released, so the clips were from the movie.

Thanks. This was before my time but it must have been a shock when Macca announced the breakup in April. If I was a Beatles fan in 1970 & saw the Let it Be & Two of Us clips, I would have been stoked - two great songs, the next album must be great, Abbey Road was amazing, the band is still peaking, etc. There is no hint of a breakup & then BOOM!!

Exactly my point. That's why they weren't sitting around brainstorming about how to promote the new album.

Well, the alternative would/could have been to play the B-side of "Let It Be", which was "You Know My Name, Look Up The Number". Uh, given the choice I would have done "Two Of Us" for sure, which actually was recorded/performed a bit like in the old days when John and Paul did nice harmonies.

Yeah, they wrote it actually about 10 years before they recorded it for Let It Be. (there is an earlier attempt on Anthology 1 from March 1963)

Yeah, I was 15 in 1970 and it was a long time before I realized that Let It Be was actually recorded before Abbey Road!

I believe you're talking about The One After 909, not Two Of Us.

Yeah, I was! I either posted in the wrong thread or had a brain fart! Undoubtedly the latter!

It was a shock. I still remember the teen girls crying about it and yelling how mad they were at Paul and how he had thrown Ringo out of his house in a fit. in fact, nearly every time I met a Beatle fan who hates Paul, they usually haven't gotten over that announcement

Yeah, poor Ringo. Paul really "killed the messenger" that day.
