Didn't John Lennon claim to invent Heavy Metal with Ticket To Ride?? I remember reading that, maybe the Playboy interview.
-
I think it's Helter Skelter! Loved hearing him do it Weds. in Atlanta!

I'd say the genre was invented by Black Sabbath. But there were pre-cursors, including Pauls' Helter Skelter, which he wrote because he heard Pete Townshend bragging The Who did the "loudest most raucous song ever" in I Can See For Miles, and Paul said "Gotta do it!" But there were also Cream and Jimi Hendrix with their "proto-metal" stylings. And there was also Born To Be Wild by Steppenwolf with the seminal lyric "I like smoke and lightning, heavy metal thunder..." in '67.

John Lennon on Ticket to Ride: John was asked about the song in his Playboy interview of 1980. ?That?s me, one of the earliest heavy-metal records,? he explained. ?Paul?s contribution was the way Ringo played the drums.? http://www.beatlesebooks.com/ticket-to-ride

Paul's Helter Skelter may not have been the 1st, but it's probably the most influential in terms of bring heavy metal/punk to the masses as soon as it did. The White Album had so many listeners when it came out. Lots of interviews with genre leaders often cite that song/album as a major influence.

No one person or group invented heavy metal. Ticket To Ride had a hint, certainly Helter Skelter. I Want You (She's So Heavy) fits the bill. Some Blues and Yardbirds, then Led Zep, of course. Hendrix was crucial. A LOT of people invented heavy metal.

Heavy Metal was really invented by Marshall Amplifiers.

This must be partly true!

Helter skelter is definitely one factor. All others listed as well. Maybe even 96 tears as well, or is that more punk/garage?
