Lennon in Surround Sound?
-
As reported on WogBlog, seven of John's studio albums (from "Plastic Ono Band" through "Double Fantasy") are getting re-released in Japan on December 3. They'll be in three formats: SHM-CD [Super High Materials] SHM platinum SACD As far as I know, SACD discs are always in surround sound. If that's true, is it possible that these will be released ONLY in Japan??

I have a SACD version of George Harrison Live in Japan which is made by Capitol in the U.S. and is in both Stereo and Multi-channel Surround Sound. So Lennon's wouldn't necessarily have to be in Surround-Sound or made in Japan. Most surround sound releases now are on DVD Audio or Blu-ray Audio formats. Which makes sense because most people don't have DVD 5:1 sound in their cars.

Yes, I have that "Live In Japan" SACD also, though I can't play the surround mix since I don't have an SACD player. That was ten years ago, though, and I thought SACDs had fallen out of favor since you need a special player, whereas the DVD-As can be played in DVD players and Blu-ray Audio in Blu-ray players (along with the DVD-As). The big Genesis boxes from several years ago had DVD-A discs for the U.S. and SACDs elsewhere, so I wonder if these John Lennon releases will get a U.S. release with DVD-A instead (or Blu-ray Audio). Anyway, it seems to me that these discs would have to be surround sound; otherwise, there's no reason to make them SACDs, unless there was a ton more audio content that couldn't fit on a regular CD.
