St. Stephen's Day/Boxing Day
-
December 26th These are 2 great holidays! The celebration of Jesus's first major supporter. ...and a day where wealthy business owners would box gifts and give them to their most needful employees. I haven't heard much about them lately. Does anyone remember these or know of those who celebrate them?

A friend of mine whose grandmother worked as downstairs staff in a Big House (think Downton Abbey) in the UK, told me that after Christmas, the staff would be presented with boxed gifts from their employers, and they would be given the day off. I know it's still an official holiday in England.

So would the staff get their gifts Christmas night on the 25th? I'm wondering if the family did some regifting or if they already had the staff's presents bought and wrapped. Heaven forbid the family would have to wrap the gifts themselves!

That was my optimism taking over and hoping the fam was kind enough to gift them the night before so the staff could have the WHOLE day off. Sigh.

They lived in the servant's quarters of the mansion, so it wouldn't make much difference.

Why wouldn't it have made a difference to the servants to have a whole day to do as they pleased, to visit their own families all day away from the mansion, or to simply sleep in? They would still have had to report to the meeting to receive the gifts at a certain time set by the family on their "day off." Yes, it would have made a difference to the servants.

In those days, everybody got up at the crack of dawn no matter what. They could have gotten their breakfast and gifts and have been on their way with the whole day left to do as they pleased. Who knows? I'm sure every household had their own way of doing it.

How does it feel to be right? Oh, and Merry Christmas

My baby turns 20 on Boxing Day! And when I call him my baby, he rolls his eyes & says: MOM! SERIOUSLY! I'm all grown up now!" I just hug him & tell him he could be 250 years old but he'd still be my baby.

Well, in the Eastern time zone Christmas is over and now it’s Boxing Day in Canada, the U.K. and other countries.
