the band interesting fact

Paul has being playing with these musicians longer then any others in his career and Wicks is the longest serving musician on the planet to work along side Macca

This band has also been the most "back up" band he has had. Which is probably easier to maintain and control. The previous line up was similar, but they also got more spot light time. Wings was a different animal all together.

"The previous line up was similar, but they also got more spot light time." I don't know about that, think both bands are really backup bands. They have a couple of guitar solo's and do backup vocals. Abe is more of a showman than any of the previous drummers.

I think he means the fact that for example on the 1993 world tour Hamish got a lead vocal while Paul played drums ("aint no sunshine", it wasn't just for unplugged in 91, i saw him do it at earls court london in 1993), and stuff like that, they dueted on Ebony and Ivory for a while don't forget. That would count as more spot light time for sure! And certainly in press stuff, although definitely no wings, they got to speak and be on things. Maybe it was because Linda was in the band that he still wanted to treat them as equals, rather than now where they are clearly hired hands. (How i wish Linda was still here to be in the band... do you think she'd still have wanted to in her 70s, in fact would Paul even still be touring)

Yeah, but who needs the drummer to be a showman in a Paul McCartney band? Joe English in Wings was very much a showman and very energetic. I agree about the previous band being a back up band, but in that line up, Robbie got to do guitar solos on stage by himself in 89 and 93, and Hamish did sing the Ebony and Ivory duet, and the band played parts of Pick Up The Pieces. Hamish also got to sing Ain't No Sunshine. I have always thought it would be cool if Paul would play a song from Brian and Rusty's solo recordings live, and let them have the spotlight for a song each.

I just said that! *goes back to being invisible!*

Don't sweat it, I think we entered our responses almost at the same time, as I did not see yours until after mine! Good points! Now, go back to being invisible!

Wings (all configurations) was a BAND unit. His current players are "book ahead and ring me" backing players. BUT!!! ... that's not a knock on them. In fact, his current band is my favourite touring combo...and that includes Wings!

I saw it at Earls Court as well, but that song was NOT done at the US shows. So it was a limited solo spot for Hamish.

Hamish...or as a mate said, "that guy with the Mt Rushmore head." Totally the wrong fit for McCartney with his Average White Band vibe.

"How i wish Linda was still here to be in the band... do you think she'd still have wanted to in her 70s, in fact would Paul even still be touring" Nobody really know but if I had to make a guess I would say she would not be in the band and Mr. McCartney would have stopped touring awhile ago. It is well known that she did not want to be in the band in the beginning and while she probably did not mind it I don't think she loved it. I have a feeling she would have wanted to go back to a more quiet life staying busy with her photography and cook books.

I saw Wings in 1976, Paul in 89 and 93 and this current line up in 2002 and 2009. I have enjoyed them all equally, can't say one was better than the other. They were and all are great bands. Probably because Paul was up front!

IMHO, I think Paul would still be touring and would want Linda up there with him, or at the very least, along for the ride. He loves performing too much to give it up, no matter what.

You may be right but she did not seem to me to be a person who would want to be doing this in her 70's.

Are we being sarcastic? As a fan of Billy Joel I visit his concert all my life. Tickets on a show is cheaper even now!

Hamish had his solo spot during every show on the Sept - November 1989 european tour, apart from the very first show,in Norway. And it seems that continued for the UK shows in January 1990. It was just the US and Japanese tours, plus the second UK tour, where the song was dropped.

They didn't do a Hamish lead vocal in the January 1990 UK shows, it was the Sept 1993 UK shows where they did "aint no sunshine" with Paul on drums, we were 2nd row middle and i have a photo of Paul at the drum kit (so i remember!)
