Getting wi-fi/Internet access when there is none
-
Does anyone know how I can get something for my laptop in order to get internet access at a friend's condo (she is renting) when there is no Wi-Fi or Internet in the condo? Do you buy something or get something from your internet provider? I know there's something, but even the Best Buy guy in an online chat kept steering me in the wrong direction to signal boosters (I already have one that plugs into a USB port on my laptop and it gives me 5GHz with my home router) Thanks!

Public Wi-Fi and home wifi are broadcast like a radio signal. If there is a wifi signal of any kind to pick up at the condo you should be able to receive it with a plug in wifi antenna. If the signal is weak,a small usb driven wifi antenna tower signal receiver and booster can help. We have public wifi to a degree, but it is 2.4 GHz. You have to be within a block or so of a transmitter to receive it without a signal booster. 2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz WiFi | What Is The Difference?

I get what you're saying (like I said I already own a booster) but I don't want to count on there being an unsecured signal I can receive there. There is something else you can buy that insures you can get a signal so matter where you are. I'm going to call AT&T when I'm done here.

This may not help - but my suggestion would be to call your phone or cell phone provider and see if they offer plans or options that are short term. (that could be password protected etc ....) *(if there was cable or something you could tap into the router wireless with it also being password protected). not the greatest of answers - hope they have some good options for you.

Thanks. The problem is that this guy who owns the condo (and rents it to my friend) has NO Wi-Fi or internet available at all (dumb!) So my friend had to use her GB on her phone if she needs internet access! Like I said, I'm calling AT&T (if I can ever get off of here!)

There should also be an online map of local wifi service areas and hot zones for reception.

After well over an hour and almost 13 pages of online chat, I found out through AT&T that I have to have AT&T wireless to get what's called "Mi-Fi" from them which is a temporary Mobile Hotspot. However, my son said that he could get it for me through my current provider (Verizon) He is the manager of the Electronics dept. at a Target. I did end up changing my AT&T DSL to faster U-Verse for a cheaper price when bundled with my home phone/long distance which are also AT&T. Plus I have DirecTV which is now owned by AT&T.
