Thoughts on "McGear"?
-
Haven't listened in years, but pulled it out tonight and forgot how much I enjoy it. Particularly Leave it and Have you got Problems? Basically a wings album with Mike instead of Paul singing. Fun and joyful sounding. Any other thoughts?

Great album, though mostly forgotten. As you said, its basically an excellent Wings album, with Mike on vocals. Paul wrote most of the songs. If it had been put out as a Wings album, it would have sold in the millions - just another example of Paul's poor marketing. The Man Who Found God on the Moon is my favorite track & should have been a single. The song sounds so much like what "indie" bands are putting out today (e.g., Vampire Weekend). Also, 10cc backs much of the album. Lot of talent on this album!

Its a really good album with some great tunes from Paul and some witty lyrics from Mike. As Joey stated, its very much a Wings album with Mike singing, and with Gerry Conway filling in on drums between Denny Seiwell & Geoff Britton. Favourite tracks include The Casket (Paul's melody and Roger McGough's poem), Rainbow Lady & The Man Who Found God On The Moon. Rainbow Lady:

I thought this was a good album on the first listen, and for a few listens thereafter; however, it is an album completely without substance, full of the kind of throwaway tracks for which Paul is so often criticised - What Do We Really Know; Norton; Have You Got Problems; Giving Grease a Ride, etc. All garbage - fascinating, but garbage. Even the epic end track, The Man Who Found God on the Moon, becomes quickly tiresome with nothing of substance to back it up. Having said all that, Leave It is first rate, and Rainbow Lady is almost so. Edit: forgot to add, for those interested the Cd contains two extra tracks which are also McCartney/McGear compositions - Sweet Baby and Dance the Do. These aren't tagged on at the end as a bonus but are oddly placed as track 6 and 8 on the album. They don't add much.

Fair album. Nice playing. Let's face it, it's not very memorable. And Michael is as bland a vocalist as you'll find. It was a pretty hard to find curio back in the day and only worth obtaining for McCartney (of the Paul variety) completists. A couple of tracks stand out, but it's dull.

I always put on "The Casket" for a good chuckle.

I like this album. Used to play it alot when I first got it. Haven't listened to it in a while, tho; perhaps time to pull it out and spin it again.

It's a nice album, but not as good as Paul's other 70s output. It really does need to be reissued though! It seems impossible to get hold of legally at the moment. Why have they not reisuued it, anyone know?

Lack of demand, I'd expect.

But surely it makes sense to at least make it available for download and streaming? Even if demand isn't massive?

Hmmm...so it's not available out there anywhere? That's strange. I have it on vinyl and I think I've listened to it about 3 or 4 times only. Maybe I should give it another listen!

The entire album is currently available on YouTube. Hurry before they remove it.

There are copies on Amazon but the CDs are rather pricey.

Maybe you should sell it!

Nah, that goes to my kids as part of their inheritance (along with all my other Beatles related stuff!)
