Archive Collection Vinyl
-
Hi, I have recently gotten back into vinyl after a long break from the medium (30 years or so!). I am interested in opinions on the Archive collection vinyl releases, particularly from those who have both the vinyl and CD versions. I am thinking of buying some of the releases on vinyl but seeing as I already have them on CD, and I believe they are mastered from the same sources, am wondering if it's worthwhile (other than from a complete-ist point of view). How does the vinyl sound compared to the CD versions? Is there much of a difference? Thanks in advance. Alan

I've got both, the CD does sound better I'll admit but I don't have that high a sound quality vinyl player. The vinyls are amazing anyway as it is, very well done & nicely put together

Thanks, Gordy, I actually recently bought Abbey Road on vinyl and compared it to the remastered CD. I found they both sounded really good to my ears with the CD seeming a bit punchier and perhaps slightly flatter but it might have been my imagination. My local record shop has TOW on vinyl and I have a $10.00 off coupon so I think I'll drop by there and pick it up.

No worries mate. Yeah they're worth picking up due to how nice the packaging is & also you'll be getting the bonus tracks as well on the other vinyl. Which of course is a variable swing factor depending on which Archive you get

I bit the bullet & unloaded most of my 1500 vinyl records a couple of years ago.I Kept about 50. It's so convenient to have all my music on the computer & backed up on USB memory.

By "unloaded" do you mean sold? And to whom? Just curious. When I had to clean out my dad's house, he had hundreds of vinyl LPs that I couldn't give away. Granted, most were crap and the store I contacted only wanted Jazz for some reason. Everything ended up in the dumpster, along with numerous National Geographic mags and an entire Encyclopedia Britannica! (His house was in Ohio and I live in Georgia, so only was able to ship the essentials like his huge stamp collection)

I sold most of them to a few people & gave away some. They were all in very good condition as well some still in wrapper that I picked up years ago really cheap from delete bins. I just didn't want to move them again as next year we'll be downsizing to a smaller home. It's much more convenient listening to music digitally. I currently have 225 GB (77 days)of music.

I own so many vinyl's that I wouldn't even know where to begin! The best ABBEY ROAD vinyl's, in my opinion, are the MFSL (Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab) version and the Pro-Use Series version. Both are also available on factory pressed CD discs and CD-R's if you can find them! They sound incredible! The other series is the DMM (Direct Metal Mastering) series! I own The White Album in this series as well as the 1962-1966 Red and 1967-1967 Blue Vinyl's and they sound incredible too! I also found these albums on factory pressed CD's, they are also available on CD-R's! These are hard to find collectibles unless you are a devout collector! Does anyone here on the forum own any of these collectibles?

I have the White Album in vinyl remastered. Pretty sure it's MFSL. My step-father got it for me in the '80s.

The Beatles MFSL Vinyl Collection sounds outstanding! Its hard to believe that the MFSL collection was released in 1982! The White Album sounds superb!

I just bought a 6TB external hard drive. I intend to sort out & transfer some of the cds & DVDs that I have on multiple 2TB drives.

Digital is the way to go; so much easier & no clutter.

Yeah, until your 6TB hard drive crashes and you lose everything in one go. Been there, not going back.

I think it's better to use multiple smaller hard drives of one or two TB apiece than use one huge drive. You don't want a single point of failure which takes down everything you have. If you have any regular money coming in you could always rent cloud storage and back everything up, which is probably the safest option.

That's what I am doing actually. My multiple 2 TBs are full so I wanted one large one to house most of one artist & that will be backed up maybe to a cloud. The small drives are for current use.

I know, it was rather heartbreaking, but nobody (library, etc) wanted any of it. And I hadn't the luxury of time to hang around and deal with it. If I lived there, it would have been a different story. Hard to believe it's been over a year now since my dad died. (Dad broke his hip and was in a nursing home from March to June 2013. Cleaned out the house in April and May 2013 and moved Dad down here in June 2013. The house finally sold in 2014.)

That just a sad story. You had to throw away so many of his memories because of logistics. Someone should start some kind of service that goes into relatives' houses and deal with all of that if you can't get to it. In a country like the United States, children can live hundreds of miles away from their parents.

I'm sure there is such a service. Anything can be done for a dollar amount. But Nancy said most of them were crap so who'd want to pay for that? (Some items can be mailed via media mail which is 1/4 of the price of regulaer shipping.) I also have a set of encyclopedias that no one will take. I can't bring myself to do it (yet) but they will eventually end up in the trash too. As they say...one man's trash is another man's treasure.
