Yoko Ono Receive Songwriting Credit on 'Imagine'
-
-
I remember hearing John talk in an interview about how he'd taken most of the words from a poem Yoko had written, and that he thought he'd been unfair by taking sole songwriting credit. This seems only fair, even if a bit late.
-
If John was influenced by Yoko's art to create "Imagine," then she should get credit. Another reason I love John. ?

While living, why didn't he?

He wrote the song himself, but he gave always her credit for the idea in interviews. It came from her book Grapefruit. I still remember the lines "Imagine the clouds dripping. Dig a hole to put them in." Yoko certainly deserves a credit on Imagine.

It's mentioned on the back of the album. But credit is credit. He took full credit for that song and didn't give her the credit. And not 1971?

He literally said the credit was long overdue though, 2 days before he was murdered:

But when the album was released in 1971, not 1971? A credit in 1971? Yoko had to wait til 2017????

Keep in mind Yoko was awarded this songwriting credit. She didn't give it to herself.

John acknowledged Yoko as co writer after the release some years latter he even explained why initially the reason she was omitted his own chauvinism I think why it has taken so many years after the public acknowledgement for the legal acknowledgement is that Yoko was afraid with her name tied to the song the public might start rejecting it which I think has happened with the younger generation so she must have been torn keep it as John's anthem to the world, which is the way people want or be true and stand up for equality of women and claim co writing credit

My 45 says Lennon/McCartney, that's good enough for me. I think Paul wrote most of it anyway.

Really? You got a 45 that credits Imagine to Lennon/McCartney? I would hold on to that, might be the only one in existence

That song was originally published by Northern Songs (along with "Give Peace a Chance" credited as a Len/Mac song), but the pub rights have been turned over to Lenono Music (license to Downtown Music) thanks to Mrs. Robert Holmes A'Court.

Yes, but the fact that Northern once owned the publishing rights doesn't mean it was ever credited to Lennon/McCartney. I know Give peace a chance was, but of course that was released in 1969, when the songwriting partnership was still (officially) in place. Imagine on the other hand wasn't published until '71, well after the Beatles'split (and after previous solo albums by both Lennon and McCartney, which didn't feature any Len/Mac co-writing credits), so I still don't see why it should have ever been released with a co-writing credit. Certainly I have never seen a release of it with Len/Mac credit

Hi Squid! Please post a picture of that 45, I have never heard of "Imagine" credited to Lennon/McCartney!

Actually, I think I'm in error on this and was getting it mixed up with Give Peace a Chance, which is credited Lennon/McCartney. I don't have my copy of Imagine to hand, but I recall it's an Australian 7" with a Northern Songs copyright, and I perhaps assumed from that that it was credited to Lennon/McCartney.

Hi Squid! That's okay, I'm very happy that you straightened this matter out. Yes, "Give Peace A Chance" is credited to Lennon/McCartney and is considered by many, the greatest anti-war song ever written. Take care.
