New Paul Song for French Actress/Singer
-
French singer and actress Charlotte Gainsbourg (daughter of Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin) asked Paul for a song for her new album, and said he gave her "Songbird In a Cage." Her album comes out soon. I read about it in the new "Vanity Fair" magazine with Prince Harry's girlfriend Megan Markle on the cover, for September 2017. "Songbird In a Cage" is an intriguing, promising title. Really makes you want to hear this. As one would with any new Macca composition.

Will be nice to hear it, he has written some pretty good songs for other artists. My all time favorite is "On The Wings Of A Nightengale" for the Everly Brothers in 1984.

Agree on "Nightingale," though "Let's Love" was pretty much a perfect Peggy Lee song. And while the song Diana Krall recorded a couple years ago wasn't written specifically for her, it was excellent also. On his good days, Paul can really catch the essence of a singer's style and write for that style -- the tune for the Everlys being the perfect example.

Those are all such great songs!! I keep forgetting that On The Wings of a Nightengale wasn't written by the Everly Brothers, it was so well matched to them. Wings of a Nightingale with intro by the Everly Brothers
Let's Love ~ Peggy Lee not sure if this is the version produced by Paul, there are some really nice orchestral touches on this version, so maybe... If I Take You Home ~ Diana Krall -
Here it is! Reminds me of Oriental Nightfish, but produced by The Fireman Very nice!

I agree that it is Oriental Nightfish-ish.

At this point in his career, I wish he would do more of this. He is such a great interpreter of music and melody.

Don't like this song at all. Total crap

I liked the song, but I'd like to hear it on acoustic guitar, as Paul would probably have done when he composed it, in order to judge it properly.
I liked the opening music, but during the actual singing I think Ms. Gainsbourg's enhanced sound effects, etc, takes something away from the original melody of the song - she has a lovely voice and doesn't need any studio effects!
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember reading somewhere that Paul wrote the song for her, but didn't work in the studio with her when she recorded it, and don't think he was involved in the arranging of the song prior to recording. (Unless this arrangement is how he gave it to her after composing it?)

When I heard her before her singing sounded very wispy and ethereal. I haven't heard this song yet. Maybe if I click on the link I can hear it
