Set List critique

I still think of Macca as "the hardest working man in show biz" and some of you guys imply he's too lazy to work on some "new" different songs for his concerts...I don't get it. I guess maybe my conception of him as "hardest working" is wrong. I know he's no slacker, not with all the tours he's performed, and albums he's put out. And continues to do so. Motivated in large part by the sheer joy of his creativity with music, his great gift, and his being such a major player in music history, a legend. And giving so much joy through his concerts. (It's not all about the money.) He could impart even more joy from his concerts by shaking it up more with the setlist. But I suppose he's worried the majority of the audience won't be familiar with "Egypt Station" deep cuts, or with a lot of his solo post-Beatles and post-Wings songs. He and his team could do the work of going over his ouevre, figuring out which lesser-known songs would still go over well in concert. And, as has often been pointed out, he has famous "Wings" hits he hasn't done in concert that he could perform and feel confident those songs are pretty well known to the audience.

I have said it before and I will repeat myself again, I actually do not think it would be hard or take a great amount of time for McCartney and the band to add 4-6 different songs to setlist for a "new" tour especially if they are from Egypt Station. We are talking about a rock icon and his touring band for close to 20 years. I don't want to hear about lighting changes, he has well paid professionals that I am sure can handle this task. I have never said he was lazy, I just get frustrated that he has no desire to really freshen up the tour.
As for him worrying about the audience not knowing the Egypt Station songs, my answer is why should he worry. Night after night, he gives the first timers about 25 Beatle/Wings hits which is over 2 hrs worth of music. If they can't handle about 30-40 minutes worth of music that they don't know then that is their problem IMO. It is not like they are listening to some garbage songs, this is freaking Paul McCartney. In the end, I guess McCartney's ego is fragile and he has trouble dealing with polite applause for a few songs even after getting huge response to the hits.

Looking back over the last 8 years or so, I started wondering why I had been become so less enthused about attending a Macca concert. The last indoor Paul concerts I really "loved" were in Philadelphia August 14 and 15 of 2010. Going on this Website into the Tour Archives section, it was easy for me to dig out the Setlists for both shows. The answer to my question above was staring right in front of me as I perused the setlist. I was kind of amazed when I saw and remembered how many of those songs were ones I had heard for the "first time" on those consecutive nights. That was precisely why those 2010 shows were so magical to me.
Keep in mind, I missed the 1976 Wings Over America tour so the first time seeing Paul was 1990 and 1993. While I loved those shows and hearing all those Beatle songs live for the first time, both of those 1990 and 1993 shows were held in massive outdoor stadiums. It wasn't until 2002 and 2005 I saw Paul for the first time in an indoor arena venue. Those were so intimate in comparison. Still, the 2010 shows had so many different songs that I heard in 2002 and 2005.
Here is the list of Beatle, Wings, and Solo songs I heard for the first time in 2010.
Venus and Mars/Rock Show
Letting Go
Highway
1985
Let Em In
I've Just Seen a Face
And I love You
Dance Tonight
Mrs. Vanderbilt
Ram On
Sing the Changes
Ob La Di
I've Got a Feeling
Paberback Writer
A Day in the Life/Give Peace a Chance
Day Tripper
Get Back
I'm Looking Through You (2nd night)
Two of Us (2nd night)

At those 2010 shows, I heard like 19 songs I had never heard Paul perform live. That's a startling number from my recollecton. Conversely, the shows that I had a chance to see afterwards (from 2012 on) didn't have nearly as many of 1st time songs for me. And some of the new additions that Paul did add over the last 8 years weren't nearly as good (for example, Mr Kite, 4-5 seconds, Temporary Secretary) in my opinion. It just got to the point for me where Paul's shows weren't nearly as exciting as they had been in 2002, 2005 and 2010 where I was hearing Paul songs that I loved for the 1st time. This is why I am hoping that Paul plays around 8 songs from ES at these upcoming shows. That would get me excited and motivated to see him again in 2019. But as most of us have been saying...I don't think that is a reality as Paul will be approaching 77. The only chance in my opinion, is if he decides to reach into his most recent album...Egypt Station. Let's hope!
I was fortunate to see him in 1976 and it was amazing !!. People were actually there to hear Wings songs and pleasantly surprised to hear a few Beatle songs. In 1990, he started playing more Beatle songs but that was kind of cool to hear them for first time. That being said, he still opened with song from FITD and if my memory is correct played six songs from FITD. The 1993 tour followed the same path with plenty of songs from OTG but he did open with Beatle song for the first time. Anyway, I saw him for the last time in 2010 in Charlotte NC. As I have stated several times, only reason I went was to attend with my daughters who had never seen him live. I had seen him in 2009 when he did Citifield concerts and enjoyed the Fireman songs.
The following tours I lost interest because to me his set list had become stale. McCartney no longer did many songs from his most current album, think he may have done two off MAF. I also got bored hearing he was telling the same old stories between songs. Even "Live And Let Die" with its fireworks had become ordinary to me. ( I understand it is very cool if you have not seen it before). I also was started to get "annoyed" that I was buying all his solo albums which I for the most part loved but was never really getting to hear them live. I really shook my head when he started playing songs like "Benefit For mr Kite" and "In Site Of All Danger" instead of some really good solo songs he ignored. IMO it has not become a freaking joke. McCartney released a successful album with critical acclaim and he still only does a token three songs live. At this point, nothing will change but it is still frustrating that there are so many good songs that will never be heard live. Finally, his tour names are a freaking joke. They give the impression he is really going to shake up his set list and it winds up being tweaked. Oh well.
Made some typos and did not have a chance to edit them but hope you understand what I was trying to say. Wish you could have longer time to edit your own posts !!

I don't think he's lazy. I think he's just used to playing big stadium shows with mostly casual fans who know the Beatles and some Wings and very little else, so he gives them the crowd-pleasers. And after doing these sorts of shows for a quarter century, he's not likely to change. He's fallen into a comfortable habit that works for 90% of his concert crowd (but drives a few of us crazy).

Think you hit it right on the head Bruce. I have never thought that Paul was lazy. It's more of a "comfort level" with his live shows as you say.
As hard core Macca fans particularly I think our best chance for more Post Beatles' and "known" Wings' songs is with his latest album. I think we will find out in less than a month from now with his upcoming South America shows.

I meant to say in the last paragraph above..."our best chance for more Solo songs is with his latest album". The first South American show is March 20 in Chile. I think that might tell us if Paul and Band will get more adventurous and give the real fans more Egypt Station songs. Keeping my fingers crossed.

IMO, McCartney could sing a three hour version of Ebony and Ivory, and I would be still screaming and hollering! And I will be "screaming and hollering" in Moline and Arlington very soon! I think the setlist for the past 20 years has been superb. I have heard "Listen To What The Man Said", "1985", "Junior's Farm", "Temporary Secretary", "Hi Hi Hi", "Venus and Mars Rock Show", "Ram On", "Let 'Em In", "Mrs. Vandebilt", "Letting Go", "C Moon", "Too Many People", "Another Day", "Love Me Do", "Your Mother Should Know", "Benefit for Mr. Kite", "Getting Better", "Penny Lane", etc., etc. I have also heard selections from great solo albums like Electric Arguments, Flaming Pie, Driving Rain, Chaos and Creation In The Backyard, Memory Almost Full, New, and Egypt Station. Throw in The Beatles and Wings songs he just has too perform, and you have a perfect setlist. Yes, the nitpicking on this site drives me crazy at times.

Everybody certainly deserves their own opinion. As a Hard Core Fan, I have seen my share of McCartney concerts and I couldn't agree more with everything you wrote. I'm real happy he's still playing and playing for almost 3 HOURS a show. Not many will give you that, a hell of a lot of songs! He's the only artist I travel to see. Based on his past performances everybody should know by now what to expect at his concerts.
Yeah, we could all HOPE to hear what we want, but if not..., it doesn't take away from the show for me at all!!!

Paul confirmed in a couple of interviews published today by Brazilian newspapers that he is rehearsing "Back In Brazil" and will play the song if he and his band can learn it in time for the concerts next month.

Thanks 5th Beatle. Maybe I'm being too hopeful, but this might be a good sign. I'm not a musician, but to me "Back in Brazil" is a more difficult song for the Band to play than some of the other ES songs I'm wishing and hoping they add to the setlist.
As a hard core Macca fan, I would love to hear "Back in Brazil" but I'm hoping he also adds:
*Happy With You (great song for Paul to sing for Nancy)
*Confidante (an oppportunity for Paul to give us a better vocal than the studio verson)
* I Don't Know (Paul and the Band have been playing this in recent rehearsals so it shouldn't be too hard)
*People Want Peace (Maybe Paul can bring back "A Day in the Life" and segway into "People Want Peace")
*Dominoes (one of my favorites on ES and would be great live imho)
If he stays with the 3 ES songs they played in 2018 and adds the songs above plus "Back in Brazil" then I will be at one of the US shows in late May or June. I think all of the songs listed immediately above (not including "Back in Brazil") would be relatively easy for Paul and the Band to relearn and play. It just depends on whether Paul wants to get adventurous. He should be "proud" of these songs. There are still plenty of room for the "hits" for the casual Beatle and Paul fans.
Others have mentioned that songs like these would be "bathroom breaks" for the Beatle crowd or first timers. In my opinion, Paul shouldn't worry about this in the least. If I were Paul, I would be thinking about all the internet/youtube "hits" he would be getting for these songs and how many more casual fans would hear them that didn't buy Egypt Station.
I'm probably dreaming but this big time Paul Solo fan can still hope.

I'm happy for you guys and glad that you still get the McCartney thrill every time you see him. I guess I'm a little more discerning when I look at his setlists from the last 4-5 years. I also have to watch my budget and I don't want to spend that kind of money unless I see a more diverse setlist with more songs I've never heard before.
I still remember the concerts I saw in 2010. There were so many songs I loved on those consecutive nights that I had never heard live before. This was the tour that I believe started in Phoenix. I loved the Wings' songs I hadn't heard live until those shows (Venus and Mars/Rock Show, Letting Go, 1985, Ram On, Mrs. Vanderbilt etc). Then he did some of my favorite Paul Beatle songs like...I've Just Seen a Face, And I Love You, I'm Looking Through You, Two of Us. He also did a couple from brand new ones at the time from Electric Arguments plus old Beatle hits like Ob La Di, Paperback Writer, Day Tripper, Get Back etc. Those and others were brand new for me and I loved those shows. That's what i'm looking for now. I realize that he is significantly older so the most realistis thing he could do in my opinion is to play about 8-10 songs from Egypt Station. That is what would motivate me to attend one of the upcoming US shows. That is what this fan is hoping for but as I said, I'm thrilled for you guys if you're happy with the setlist that he played at the end of last year.

Alas, this may be more a case of one of Paul's token additions for a couple of dates -- Back in Brazil played in Brazil, like he does Hope of Deliverance in countries where it was a hit and Mull of Kintyre where a bagpipe band is readily available. I hope I'm wrong, but not making bets.

In the past twenty or so years, Paul and his great band have played almost every song I have begged for; i.e., "1985", "Rock Show", "Hi Hi Hi", etc. The only real Bucket List songs I would love to hear live are "Smile Away", "Martha My Dear", "Silly Love Songs", and "Oh Darling". Yes, I love, love, love Egypt Station, but I grew up with the songs I mentioned. Let me hear them first.

I want some of whatever you’re smoking! You will never hear him do any of those songs live, with possibly the exception being Silly Love Songs, but I doubt even that. He would be INSANE to attempt Oh! Darling with the current state of his singing voice. Sorry to be a Debbie Downer, but as John would say “that’s reality.”

I'll doublel-click on Nancy's comment. And my list of songs I wish he would play that he's either never played or hasn't played in 25+ years could go on for pages.

I wish he'd play more songs from the last 20 years instead of ones that he has trouble singing now. Why not play recent ones? Yes, I know all about 1st timers. How about 15 songs from the first 40 years of his life & 15 songs from the latest almost 40 years of his life?

oobu24,
I agree with you 100%. A few of us have been saying similar thoughts over the last few months. I think the only chance for a true "freshen up" tour is if Paul decides that he really wants to play his latest songs...namely Egypt Station. He certainly should remember these songs the best plus he recorded them in his mid 70's voice.
Lately, my wife has been getting me into all different types of music which has been very good. But I always come back to Paul when I feel the need. Every time I go back to Egypt Station, I continue to feel that overall it is a great album. That is why I'm continuing to hope that we will see a significant shakeup in the setlist. To me that would mean Paul and Band playing like 8 songs from Egypt Station that I believe would be very realistic. I listed them here, a page or two back. They tend to be shorter songs that even the 1st timers would find enjoyable. And as you say, there is plenty of room for the Beatle and Wings classics.
This coming Wednesday (April 13th) we will be only 1 week away from the Chile Show (April 20). I believe we will find out in Chile if we get a true "Freshen Up" tour the rest of the way including the US Shows. I'm hoping for more than just the 3 ES songs he was doing in late 2018. If that is all we get, I'll be very disappointed for an album that got so many great reviews. It would just tell me that Paul just doesn't have the drive to broaden his stage act for many of the "hard core" fans. At his age, I would certainly understand it but there is always hope and that is what I'm doing now. I can't wait to find out. It is now less than 2 weeks for the South American shows to begin.

You said April, but you mean March. I know, Senior Moment. I have those too! Lol!
