Crank / telemarketer phone calls
-
I have been getting so damn many calls lately it is really ridiculous. But today one freaked me out. I looked at the caller ID & it had my name & number! I answered cos I thought WTH? It was an automated call that I have had before about microsoft owning me money or something being cancelled. So I hung up. But now it has called back 3 times & it's really becoming annoying. Those do not call lists don't work anymore!

Here’s what I do (I have AT&T home phone and Verizon cellphone) Only answer numbers you definitely know, or “wireless caller” if you are expecting a guy from a company coming to your home (like CoolRay or Mr. Plumber) My phone will say Telemarketer, Spam Caller, or Unknown Caller. I don’t answer and let it go to the answering machine. On my cellphone I have the YouMail app that automatically blocks tons of crap. I just screen the rest. If your home or cell starts with (for example 440-777- don’t answer any calls from those numbers unless you are sure it is someone you know. And NEVER say the word “Yes” to some telemarketer, etc as they are just recording your voice and will use it to scam you.

I got those same calls about refunding your money - it is a scam! They just want to get remote access to your computer! I played along with one guy (with of course an Indian accent) and he tried to get me to say yes, and I told him “I’m not saying that!” Then he wanted to get remote access to my laptop. I hung up on him, he called back and my mom was dumb enough to answer and he starts yelling at her “Why did you hang up on me?” She had the sense then to just hang up. Never got another call from them after that!

Yes, I know those are all scam calls but they are getting very creative because of the caller ID. I've seen them use my ban's name, my name, my insurance name, even just regular names with the same prefix as yours so that you might answer thinking it's local.
You can also go to http://donotcall.gov & register there.

I’ve been on the “do not call” list for about 10 years. It’s still a pain in the butt.

Find out who is calling you here...

But this one had my name & my number on my caller ID.

I got one when I had a land line as well. This article sadly explains what is going on...

I wish they would all stop.

It's horrible. I get junk calls at home, on my cell and at work, and it's gotten massively worse in the last year or so. Unfortunately, my job is in media relations and I often get totally legit calls from numbers I don't recognize, so I can't just ignore the unfamilar numbers.

They are really terrible lately. They will use your bank's name, your electric co's name, a real estate co, etc. That really should be terms for a fraud case.

They even used my Mother's name and mostly her number. (Only one nuber was off-not enough to catch at a glance). I picked up. I quickly hung up again. I enter every possible contact I can think of on both my landline and cell. Now I really look first before I ever pick up. But that doesn't stop them from calling. Does anyone get Chinese callers?

No, I haven't had those calls LittleLaura. I do get calls from Microsoft trying to say my computer is being hijacked. I tell them I don;t even have a computer.

I stick to the same philosophy...

Someone needs to invent an app that lets you push a button and remotely detonate the phone of telemarketers and robocalls.

Or at the very least sound an airhorn in their ear numerous times.

I get at least 5/6 spam calls a day and I even have the ATT call protect app, and being on the do not call list doesn't do anything to help anymore. I never answer them, most come from a MI area code since I still have an MI phone number.

Almost exclusively.
There's a Chinese app that blocks unknown incoming calls, almost like an e-mail spam filter. It automatically blocks known fraud numbers, as well as telemarketers and loan companies. The numbers of whoever calls you are on a list, so you can call them back if you want, but your phone never rings. It's just like a spam folder. There are all kinds of settings, including blocking any and all businesses. I can't remember the last time I got a spam call.
Not answering the phone is a lot easier around here since most people don't use the phone to talk on the phone anymore. Even work conversation are mostly over text these days. Most of the phone calls I get are from my roommate, asking me to make something specific for dinner.

Has anyone noticed lots fewer suspected spam and telemarketer calls this week? We have! I heard the government was cracking down on them and blocking them. I think we only got one yesterday (the 15th)

Seems like we got less of those calls this week, but we still got some.
