Paul Sings and Writes Ballads
-
To follow up Bruce's recent Post (Paul Sings Rock and Roll) I thought I would start a new Post called "Paul Sings and Writes Ballads". My main qualification woud be making a CD with all Post Beatles' Songs. Afterall, we have heard Paul's great Beatle Ballads millions of times.
Here is my 18 Song "Ballads"CD:
1. Warm and Beautiful -Last track on "At the Speed of Sound" and great ballad/Lost Gem.
2. I'm Carrying - From London Town. I like best the acoustic version (Without strings) and on Youtube.
3. Wanderlust - From Tug of WAr . I like best the "Give My Regards to Broadstreet" Version that ends with a little snippet of "Here There and Everywhere".
4. Rainclouds - Leftover from Tug of War and great B-Side. Should have been on Tug of War.
5. Tug of War - From the Album Tug of War with great lyrics
6. Put It There - from Flowers in the Dirt. I like the "live" version the best from Tripping the Live Fantastic.
7. Calico Skies - from Flaming Pie
8. Little Willow - from Flaming Pie
9. Footprints - from Press to Play and great hidden gem.
10. Single Pigeon - from Red Rose Speedway and another great hidden gem
11. Growing Up Falling Down - Leftover from Chaos and Creation. The most obscure selection that I absolutely love.
12. Too Much Rain from Chaos and Creation
13. End of the End - from Memory Almost Full
14. I Don't Know - from Egypt Station
15. Hand In Hand - from Egypt Station
16. Early Days - from the Album called "New"
17. Seize The Day - from McCartney 3 and just shows that Paul is "still" writing great songs
18. Maybe I'm Amazed - from McCartney. Probably the most "known" of all the songs
One think in common with all the songs above is that they all have great "lyrics".

For those that may not be up to doing a full list or CD. you can certainly just do "Additions" to the songs above. I can easily add about 10 more that could enhance this tracklist above.

Great list! I would suggest:
My Love - Red Rose Speedway
Love in Song - Venus and Mars
One of These Days - McCartney II
Your Loving Flame - Driving Rain
-
I would add Beautiful Night.
-
My Love is an essential ballad.
Beautiful Night, agreed. I love that song.
Through Our Love.... I have a fondness for that Paul period.... I think it is a beauty
BJ, I am going to have to think about the rest.
I think of Mull of Kintyre as a ballad... Majestic... one of his all-time greats.
-
I might even throw in Only Love Remains.
Like I say, I have a fondness for that period.

PS Also totally agree with you on "Only Love Remains" definitely a "lost" classic from Press to Play.
Come to think about it, "Paul Sings and Writes Ballads" might deserve a 2 CD Set.
Just thinking about your additions, I might add a few of my own.
Hey Toris...
Love your additions. I love "Through Our Love". I think it was the last track on "Pipes of Peace" but I will have to look that up. Talk about a forgotten classic an lost geim. I would also have to agree on Beatiful Night. Best version imo is the Flaming Pie one with Ringo. I know some people don't love "My Love" but I love the Rock Show/Wings Over America version where Paul goes into his more "Soul" singing.
I also consider "Mull" a ballad. Ballad songs to me represent a "slower tempo" type of song and "Mull" certainly is that. Unfortunatedly, my multiple attendance at Paul "live" shows (11 times I think) didn't include "Mull" in the Setlist and I always felt bad about it. The ironic thing is that Macca was still singing "Mull" well as late as 2018 I think. How great it might have been hearing those bag pipes live.

Great "Adds" McCall. Really love "One of These Days" one of my absolute favs on McCartney 2. Same thing about "Your Loving Flame" from Driving Rain. So Glad I got to hear it "live" on his "Driving Rain" tour. He sang it so well on that tour and "Love in Song" is another great "lost classic". I already commented on "My Love"...love the Rock Show version.

Hey Nancy...Was thinking about "Beautiful Night" but I wanted to give you a chance to add it yourself. Classic ballad imo and I love Paul's vocals. Love the ending of the song with Ringo at the end.

Great choice Toris. Press to Play is Paul's most underrated album imo and what a great ballad.
-
Thanks for all the additions so far.
An obvious choice would also be "My Valentine". So Glad that Michael Buble covered this late Paul classic. While I like it. I love Paul's album version the best with Eric Clapton's great guitar solo.
Another great one imo is also from the "Kisses" album and is called "Only Our Hearts". I love Paul's vocals on this one and I love, love Stevie Wonder's Solo Harmonica in the middle. So glad that Spotify added "Only Our Hearts" to their Paul McCartney Playlist. After a few listens on Spotify it really grew on me and I realized what a great song it is.

"Through Our Love" and "So Bad," are, for me, his two best solo ballads, but there are tons of other ones too. Those two, however, are right up there with "Here, There and Everywhere" in my opinion. I also think "Love In Song" is in the running as well. He's written so many beautiful ones. Any single one of his numerous ballads could and would be a career maker for most artists. Paul just sneezes them out. He has to be the greatest musician of the century.

Hey Beatles4Ever
Great additions.
Pipes of Peace was a mixed album for me but I love "So Bad" , "Through Out Love" and the title cut. All 3 could be on this List imo.
Not that it's necessarily a Ballad, but I also love "The Other Me". I love the lyrics in general and the tune. The only thing I didn't particularly like was Paul's singing at the end of the song.
I didn't think "Pipes of Peace" had a good flow song to song. More or less just a collection of songs but I did love those 4 songs.
For some strange reason, I like the version of "So Bad" a little better than the "Pipes of Peace album version. Both are good however.

Beatles4ever,
At the end, or my last post, I meant to say that I liked the version of "So Bad" on the "Broad Street CD a little better.

I would add songs "How Kind Of You" from CHAOS, "Two Magpies" from "Electric Arguement" and "Every Night" from "McCartney".

Great choices Yankeefan. I was thinking about "How Kind of You" when I was first drawing up my list or dream CD. I think I didn't include it because I already had "Too Much Rain" and "Growing Up/Falling Down". I think you said it...how much on a roll Paul was with his writing during Chaos. Another one of the Leftovers from Chaos that I love is called "This Loving Game" not to be confused with "Your Loving Flame" from Driving Rain. As you know, "Summer of 59" and "Comfort of Love" are also very good "Chaos" leftovers.
And I love Every Night (my 2nd favorite on Paul's initial album). Two Magpies is an absolute "hidden gem".
-
Another great "leftover" from Paul during his "Chaos Sessions" was "She Is So Beautiful" which was an extra song on the Japanese Edition of Chaos and Creation. Another great Ballad imo.
And how could I forget other Flaming Pie great Ballads like Somedays and Heaven On a Sunday.
Forget a 1 CD of great Paul "Post Beatles" Ballads. Judging by the number of tracks all of us have listed, I think it would have to be a Double CD with at least 40 songs.
This is why the man is so great. He has never stopped writing terrific songs. I was going over these lists with my wife who certainly knows Paul McCartney and loves his Beatle songs. But as far as Solo Paul, she didn't know half of them. This is why Paul needs a new collection of "Leftover and Rarities". He has so many basically "unknown or hidden" songs>
-
You just mentioned "Somedays" I was going to put it here.
It would be tough to have to cut songs off this list in the interest of time allowed on the album...I like the list of songs and can easily add more:
some not known as well by a casual listener:
A Certain Softness (Chaos)
Distractions
This One (Flowers)
No More Lonely Nights
Heart Of The Country (Ram)
Dear Friend (Wildlife)
I could keep going, but I would have the tougher time not allowing some to make it to the album.

I guess I'm just not aware enough of the "Broad Street" album. The movie was so thoroughly panned that I just dropped the whole idea of it. So, I am not sure how the versions of any song on it might be different from tthose on another album. I do agree that "Pipes of Peace" did not flow as an album. It seems made up bits and pieces left over from "Tug of War." I love certain songs from it but find listening to it not a great experience. Actually, I have numerous CD's of Paul's ballads. I think there are about 5 of them....there are more than enough great ballads to fill that many CD's. I need to play them for my self again and see just which ones I selected and the order that I placed them!!! I do like to fit 'em together just the right way for the best listening experience!!

Hey Beatles4ever
I probably should have given the complete name of the album "Give My Regards to Broad Street. It was the soundtrack CD featured in the movie. Paul did more or less did "live" versions of some of the songs in the movie. One was "So Bad". While it is very similar to the original "So Bad"on Pipes of Peace it is a little different in tems of personnel. Paul used different guitarists on the live recording of "So Bad". They were Dave Edmunds And Cris Spelling. In the video of "So Bad" in the movie it showed Eric Stewart singing back-up with Linda. Not sure it was Eric or Denny Laine singing back-up on the Pipes of Peace album version. I love both of the "So Bad" versions but for some reason, I like the "live" version on "Give My Regards to Broad Street" a little better.
Funny and amazing story... You might recognize the name Dave Edmunds as a big time british musician and producer. Dave was given the daunting task of producing the new and reunion CD for the Everly Brothers in 1984. Dave had a good collection of songs for the new album but he felt he needed a brand "new single" to kick the album off. Dave did a very smart thing. He called his good friend (and who Dave just appeard in a movie with) up and asked Paul McCartney if he could write a single for the Everly Brothers new album. From what I read, Paul sent over a "Demo" that he wrote for Don and Phil.2 or 2 weeks later. The rest is history..."On the Wings of a Nightingale" became that single.
