I'm sure I omitted several great and rare tracks but on the whole this would be a great CD. The Live at the Cavern Club, the PETA End of the Century Show and the Afternoon Rehearsal for PETA were all great shows. They were one of Paul's first shows after Linda's Death and his "Vocals" in my opinion were fantastic. Paul's Run Devil Run Band looked like "Kids in a Candy Store" they were so thrilled. I would just want Paul and his Sound People to pick the best performances among the 3 Shows. As Yankeefan has said...Paul McCartney can really sing "Rock and Roll Classics" like no other and he really proved it at these Concerts.
-
Several songs don't really fit your criteria for this CD. "New", Queenie Eye" and "My Valentine" were not only singles, but they have also been played on several tours. In addition, there were official videos made for "Queenie Eye" and "My Valentine". Love the RDR songs which included his original songs on the album. IMO if people wanted to hear great vocal performance from Paul, listen to the RDR songs. If I was going to have DR song on this CD, it would be "About You" which is excellent rocker. While I love "Lonely Road" (another great vocal from Paul), "About You" is more of a "deep cut".
-
@yankeefan2
Thanks for your input Yankeefan. I agree with you that some of the songs themselves didn't necessarily fit the criteria. I included the RDR songs because I thought the "Live" versions at Paul's special performance in 1999 were even better than the studio tracks. As you know, Paul' live performances can often be better than the Studio versions when he's hitting his notes on all cylinders. That was the case on all of those shows. Same thing for "New" and "Queenie Eye". I thought those performances were better than the takes I heard on his tours. I also like "About You" but unfortunately Paul never did a great rocker like "About You" as part of his Setlist. Same problem with "I Don't Know". Paul only performed this great track one time during a "Soundcheck Performance".Here are some additional rarities I was considering for a 2 CD "Follow-Up" Compilation:
- In the Blink of an Eye - from the Ethel and Ernest Soundtrack
- Vanilla Sky - from Music from Vanilla Sky Soundtrack. Paul did this song many times on tour but personally I like the studio rendition much better. The production was perfect in my opinion. Always loved Paul's Lyrics on Vanilla Sky.
- My Soul - from the London Underground Album by Nitin Sawhney. Love Paul's song here.
- If I Take You Home Tonight - The Paul song Diana Krall recorded from her work with Paul during the "Kisses" Sessions. Don't know if Paul ever did his own version.
- Maybe Baby - from the Maybe Baby film and soundtrack. Always loved this faster version that sounds like a Jeff Lynne/ELO production.
- I Love This House - Unreleased until the Big Flaming Pie Archive/Box Set was released in 2020.
- Lindiana - Unreleased. Nice ballad in my opinion.
- Big Boys Bickering - from the Off The Ground Complete Works. From what I read, it is currently Out of Print
- Kicked Around No More - Another extra song from the Off the Ground Sessions.
- Keep Coming Back to Love - Extra Song during the Off the Ground Sessions
- Style Style - Extra Song from the Off The Ground Sessions
- Sweet Sweet Memories - Extra Song from the Off The Ground Sessions.
Almost all of these Songs and Rarities above would fit your "Flip Sides and Deep Cuts" Criteria. McCartney definitely has plenty of songs for him to consider this type of "Interim" Album/CD until he has a Brand New Album ready. As you said, only time will tell.
Thanks again. -
RDR songs work in this concept because a mostly 50's cover album was not very well known to a casual Paul McCartney fan. The additional songs you listed fit the criteria for what you are trying to achieve much better than having "New" or "Queenie Eye" on it. I have said it before and will do once again, I think having a couple of songs from a "Soundcheck Performance" would be excellent addition. My only condition is that it would be fairly unknown or never released song. Maybe some of the people on this board that have actually attended "Soundcheck Performance" could suggest some songs.
I think we will see another new album from Paul this year or early next year. It is amazing how creative he still is at his age. His vocal abilities can be hidden in the studio, and he should know how to write songs he can still handle vocally. As you know, I think your type of project will not happen in Paul's lifetime. After MPL squeezes every last dollar/pound/euro they can do with re-issues, they might do your type of project as one last way to cash in on his music legacy.

I love the "Starter Collection" for "Flip Sides and Deep Cuts" just above. Many upbeat, feel good and happy type songs among the selections. I probably should have included a few more of the great early "B - Sides" like "The Mess", "Country Dreamer", "I'm Carrying", "Sally G" etc.
I'm hoping that this Initial CD would be released and it would have success. The next collections for "Flip Sides and Deep Cuts" would bring out many additional good to great Paul McCartney songs that today are virtually unknown.
Songs like "A Love For You", "On the Wings of a Nightingale", "Flying to My Home" from the "Starter CD" could become popular if they only could be heard.
-
@b-j-conlee
I noticed I inadvertently put the wrong track on #20. I typed in "In the Blink of an Eye" for one of the "Starter CD" tracks. What I had on my original #20 was "Simple As That ". In reality, both songs are terrific rarities. I like "Simple As That" a little better for this "Starter CD" because it is more upbeat, more of an uptempo styled track. We already have a ballad a few songs previous called "I Want to Go Home" the lead song off the "Everybody's Fine" Soundtrack.Here's a little history to "Simple As That" :
Paul wrote this song during the "Pipes of Peace" Sessions. "Simple As That" never made the "Pipes of Peace" Album but eventually was put on a Charity Soundtrack called "It's A Live-In World. Another thing that makes this track rare is that some of Paul's children sing Back-Up vocals on "Simple As That". Another Hidden Gem in Paul's Discography.
-
"Songs like "A Love For You", "On the Wings of a Nightingale", "Flying to My Home" from the "Starter CD" could become popular if they only could be heard."
Sadly BJ, I disagree. Too many people have discounted Paul's songs after the Beatles and they would never think these songs were any good in comparison to his Beatle songs. There is a tiny minority like a few of this on this board that actually gave Paul a chance with his solo music and love it. It is kind of funny how Paul's solo career is liked (especially the last 20 years) so much more by the music critics than the general public. Your concept CD is more for the people like us than the casual Paul fan.

@yankeefan2
Hey Yankeefan,,,Thanks for your input as usual.Just my opinion but I think one of the problems that Paul/MPL/his other Companies have is they are way too conservative about releasing new material. It is now almost half way through 2023 and Paul's last Album/CD (McCartney 3) was released in 2020. Before that he released Egypt Station in 2018. 5 Years went by between Egypt Station and his "New" Album. For someone as prolific as Paul, I believe he should be releasing more music and at a much faster pace.
You an I were very critical of his last Compilation (2016's Pure McMcCartney) because of all the repetition. On this specific Maccaboard topic alone (New Album/CD Suggestions for 2023)) I put together various lists for potential good songs to release. Many of these were rare or extra songs that didn't make his respective album at the time. Out of those 80 songs (maybe more) on my Lists, none of those songs were on Pure McCartney or any of Paul's previous compilations.
I would think that Paul McCartney has pretty good clout with monster companies like Spotify. Pandora, Amazon etc. By releasing more new CDs or Albums etc, Paul would probably get on more Radio playlists. Even Ringo (not nearly as prolific of a composer as Paul) seems to release more new music than Paul McCartney. That doesn't seem to make sense to me.
As I have demonstrated, Paul has plenty of good material that has never been formally introduced to his Beatle or Paul Solo fans. Keeping them is his vaults, having them get lost as B-Sides, or having them released on obscure Soundtracks won't get them the exposure they truly deserve. Maybe the answer is having more new releases. Just one fan's opinion. Just look at some of my lists on this Maccaboard topic.
Thanks as usual for your attention.
-
I believe I have said this before, but I don't really think Paul cares about those B sides or other songs in the vault getting "dusty" -lol. Paul is very prolific, but my gut feeling is that he only seems to use his new album as a vehicle to play a couple of new songs on tour. We have all noticed the pattern that once an album is no longer his latest release most of the songs are never to be heard again. There are a few exceptions (Here Today, Hope of Deliverance) that will span a few tours and Paul actually likes the song. In other words, Paul has little regard for most of his solo songs IMO. McCartney III" was released in December of 2020, so it is not relatively that long ago. Finally, I am not going to be critical of anybody Paul's age about the frequency of new albums.
My main reason for being critical of "Pure McCartney" was that it amazingly did not have one song from FITD which was a comeback album from Paul after some critical failure in the early 1980's. It also did a poor job of selecting songs and doing something different. Fine to have some "hits" but maybe select live versions of these songs. This album would have been the perfect opportunity to add a couple of B-sides and or "soundcheck songs". In other words, give the project some thought and make it a mixture of hits and deep cuts.
-
@yankeefan2
Besides not having any songs from FITD, how can Paul have so many good songs not on any of his past compilations including Pure McCartney.
Let's use our "Starter CD" for "Flip Sides and Deep Cuts" as an example:-
My Old Friend - great song never on any Paul compilation
-
Goodbye - This is a tricky one. Paul actually wrote this song for Mary Hopkin while he was still a Beatle. It might be a legal problem. This is no problem for Paul McCartney. Just take it out and substitute a great rocker like "The Mess". This B-Side for the "My Love" Single has never been on any Paul compilation.
-
Thank You Darling - great little Paul and Linda Duet and never on any compilation.
-
That Was Me - Great little Deep Cut; never on any compilation.
-
A Love For You - another great rocker never on any Paul compilation. It gets relegated to the "In-Laws" Soundtrack.
6.Daytime Nighttime Suffering - This is the lone exception. Paul actually put it on Wingspan.
-
Waterspout - Has never been released by Paul
-
On the Wings of a Nightingale - Paul's Demo has never been released; never on any compilation.
-
Yvonne's the One - Has never been released.
-
Loveliest Thing - Only been released on the very large Archive Edition of FITD. Never on any compilation.
-
Back On My Feet - B- Side of "Once Upon a Long Ago. Never on any Compilation.
-
Love Come Tumbling Down - Never on any compilation
-
Flying To My Home - Never on any compilation
Do I need to go on? All the songs on our "Starter CD" for "Flip Sides and Deep Cuts" need to be available on an Affordable and Inexpensive CD for fans to buy.
I don't care whether we call it "Flip Sides and Deep Cuts" or "Leftovers and Rarities". Paul owns all these songs. Just release this "Starter CD" so average people/consumers can buy it!
What's the worse thing that can happen? More people/fans can get to know these good to great hidden gems that have never been available at a low cost before.

Realistically, this what I think the release schedule will look like for the rest of this year and 2024.
June: Eyes of the Storm book.
October: Rubber Soul Special Edition CD/LP.
November: 50th anniversary half speed mastered Band on the Run LP for Record Store Day Black Friday.
December: New album recorded with Andrew Watt.
2024: Man on the Run documentary accompanied by Archive Collection releases of London Town and Back to the Egg and possibly Cold Cuts.
2024: An LP box set similar to the singles box. -
Thanks for your post! I hope youre right, especially for the december 2023 part I am really looking forward to a new album! Not to say desperate :p. I also think it is really quiet regarding Paul in 2023. I hope he used/uses this time to finish the new album! Maybe itโs a double album haha!
-
@victor
Thanks Victor and good educated guesses. My biggest fear is your pick for a "New" Paul album in December. Even if it does happen, you might get a couple of good reviews (e. g Rollingtone) but the majority of reviewers will complain about his voice, bad lyrics etc.
My main point is why rush a new Album in December when he already has plenty of songs for a "New" Album/CD available right now. And most of these songs on an album like "Leftovers and Rarities" is when his voice was in "peak" condition.The other possibility is that Paul may have a brand "New' Song or two that he could add to "Leftovers and Rarities". That would be like "Icing on the Cake" especially if one of the songs had "single" potential. Maybe with "no frills packaging" Paul could have it released by his Birthday (June 18).
-
@dennis-arts
I love your optimism Dennis. My only caution is that a brand "New"Album better be good. It has to be at least as good as Egypt Station and New. People love to see a billionaire go down so they're ready to pounce on him if the "New" album is just average at best. I would rather wait till the album is truly ready. If it's not till "mid 2024" that is better than just releasing a mediocre CD.Even a good number of Beatle Fans (ones that don't particularly like Paul and like John and George better) won't buy a new Paul album/CD unless it's a "consensus" very good album. And Paul doesn't always help himself. I loved Egypt Station as a whole but the Record Company (and maybe Paul himself) was convinced that "Fuh You" was going to be a contemporary "Hit" . Paul continued to play this "nothing song" on tour rather than the truly great songs on Egypt Station like Dominoes. I Don't Know, Happy With You, Confidant, Despite Repeated Warnings etc. That in my opinion was a huge mistake. Egypt Station should have fared much better. You have to play the "right" songs on tour.

@b-j-conlee Like you, I have a great appetite for unreleased music and some of these songs are really good. Paul has even said that some of these songs are better than what ended up on the albums. Unfortunately, whether its the artist or the record company, there is very real resistance to releasing this type of material. Whatever the reason was that a song didn't make it onto an album or was relegated to a B-side way back when, the artist may still maintain that same reasoning today. And I think record companies think unreleased material must be sub-par in some way. Paul has said that new releases always bump this type of album off the schedule. I can think of numerous examples (Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, George Harrison) where somebody somewhere just couldn't bring themselves to fully release outtakes or B-sides even when that was the intent.
Let's consider "A Love for You." This was going to be on the Hot Hits - Cold Cuts album in 1975. That was going to be a stopgap album between Band on the Run and Venus and Mars and even had an Apple catalog number assigned to it. For whatever reason it didn't come out and Paul has hinted there was some record company resistance to it. Then in January 1981, Wings' final work was to put the finishing touches on this track and others for a Cold Cuts release that year. I guess Columbia Records wasn't thrilled about an album with tracks that couldn't even make it onto Back to the Egg. Once again, in 1986, Paul had Richard Niles do more work on the tracks but it still didn't get released, this time supposedly because a bootleg came out.
So these tracks end up coming out in dribs and drabs. If archive editions of London Town and Back to the Egg would just come out, you could assemble your own Cold Cuts. We're only missing five tracks: "Waterspout", "Robber's Ball", "Cage", "Did We Meet Somewhere Before?" and "Same Time Next Year." Actually we already have the last one on CD but I prefer to have everything with the same mastering.

I actually do a "deep dive" into the reviews of any McCartney album especially since the turn of the century. Paul has done very well with almost all of the critics, not just Rolling Stone. Heck, I have even read some pretty decent reviews of DR which most people here did not like very much. Even when Paul's current voice is mentioned in a review the last few years, they will be nice and say his voice is "weathered" at times. I remember one reviewer saying Paul's "weathered" voice was perfect for the song "Early Days". Honestly, I can't remember the last time I read review where the critics have slammed his lyrics. Feel free to prove me wrong.
I don't get it BJ. In one post you complain about how long it is between new albums and now you say why rush a new album in December. Like "McCartney III" being released in December there are good reasons to do it then. First, you have album/CD ready to be sold during Christmas season which may make a perfect gift -lol. Second, it is easier having an album/CD do very well in the charts because there is usually less competition from other artists.
-
@yankeefan2
Sorry Yankeefan. I can see how I've been inconsistent with some of my recent posts.
Let me clarify:When we're talking about "new" albums...there's a big difference between a new album of brand new material and a new album of past material. In the former (brand new..never been previously released), I think it is very important not to rush it. Make sure it is really good before you release it. Paul's in a difficult situation. At his age and reputation, he can't release a mediocre album. A below average album would be a killer and really set him back! That is why I say Paul can't rush a brand new album until it's really ready. It has to be very good; on a BOTR, Tug of War, Chaos and Creation level at this point.
In the case of a "new" album full of previously released and past songs, that is where I'm very frustrated when Paul doesn't release material that is good but nobody knows the material because it hasn't been released. An album like "Flip Sides and Deep Cuts" should have been released at least a few years ago in my opinion.
Hope I've done a better job of clarifying myself.
-
BJ, Paul is 80 and even if he releases a new album that is not top notch it is not going to make a difference to critics or the casual music fan. At his current age, critics are amazed he is still writing new songs and will give him credit for being prolific. I liked "McCartney III", but it was not on the quality level of BOTR, CHAOS and TOW and yet Paul was not set back.
I know it frustrates you to have Paul not release material that you consider good, but you need to face the fact that he is not invested in these songs. First, he and his company would not consider this type of project a money maker. Second, Paul is only concerned about his Beatle legacy and maybe some of his career with Wings. IMO he probably only cares about Wings a bit because Linda was part of the group. There is no doubt in my mind Paul could care less if any of the songs you listed were ever heard again.
OK, I have said a few times I am finished with this thread but this time I really mean it -lol. To wrap it up with a bow, it is a wonderful idea and the quality of the songs are good. This type of project has about as much chance of happening in the near future as I have playing SS for the NY Yankees. To anybody that likes your idea and the songs, you can probably make your own CD with most of the songs.
-
@victor
Victor... you really know your Paul Solo and Wings "History" and certainly better than me.
Anyway, it's late and I'll get back to you tomorrow with a couple of questions I have about "Hot Hits and Cold Cuts".
Suffice to say that things are much more complicated than they appear to be on the surface. For me (more of a novice), I just look at a song like "A Love For You" and I say "How the heck does a song this good never makes it on a Paul Solo or Wings album?" But you have given me more of an appreciation for the business side of dealing with Artists and Record Companies.To me I see so many good Paul songs that never, unfortunately, saw the light of day. I just put together a good list of "Leftovers and Rarities" type songs and say to myself "How difficult would it be to just release this album/CD? I'm sure you could give me a whole host of reasons why it is far more complicated than I think. I'll get back to you tomorrow.
