Ladies, would you have REALLY wanted to marry a Beatle?
-
Fifty years ago when I was in elementary school, all of the girls around me in class had a favorite Beatle (mostly, it was Paul). Everyone wanted to marry him and were later devastated (well, as devastated as someone who's twelve and living in the US could be) to learn he had gotten married in the late 60's. I remember thinking, "Why couldn't he wait for ME?" It was a common lament back in the day. But thinking back on it all, ladies..would you have REALLY wanted to marry a Beatle? In all honesty I would never want to marry anyone even moderately famous, let alone someone with worldwide attention like that. The lack of privacy would be a big factor in me not wanting that lifestyle. Your every move is watched and documented. You can't ever have a bad hair day or everyone knows about it. I'd never want to see Paul having aggravating paparazzi experiences like the ones you see on YouTube either. On the positive side, think of all that lovely music every day. He'd probably write a song or two just for you. Someone singing "Oh, Darling" to you as you make dinner together. So, when you think of the pros and cons, would you marry a Beatle if you had the chance?

I really should not be commenting on this subject.

That's interesting, Kittay...so you think you could have handled it. I wish that I could have that openness about new things as that idea would certainly be to me. I would definitely have enjoyed dating a Beatle (probably Paul) for a short while but as I see things, it would never have worked out, not in a million years. I'm way too traditional and conservative (not referring to politically/religiously conservative when I say that). If I were a permanent significant other I'd either consciously or unconsciously be trying to change him/his lifestyle. Although it would be interesting to see how much "I" could possibly be changed to HIS way of life in the process too. In summary, I would have liked to be a part of Paul's life for just a time and then leave it all behind to eventually be in my middle class, soccer-mom life. And then hear his songs on the radio about "the one that got away". That would surely put a smile on my face on my drive to work each morning. (Just want to say that I'm glad Paul has found a nice woman to be happy with. He deserves that.)
-
Ahhh, I would have stuck with him.
-
Ahem! Cough, cough! (puts on a lady's voice) :- "Of course I would, I would have made sure George would have eaten all of his toast. Even the crusts!!"

I would have loved to have lived the life that Linda McCartney did with Paul. (aside from the dying early part of course)

Isn't it nice knowing his current wife is named Nancy and she's from the US? You came thisclose...it could have been you!

Agreed. And I would try to visit the house in Arizona more. I wonder if he will ever sell that place?

If you would have wanted to live the life of Linda McCartney with Paul would you have wanted to join Wings so you could be with him every day? Would you have wanted to be at Abbey Road while the recording sessions were in progress at all or would you have just stayed away completely?

I would have stayed away just as Linda did. No girlfriends were there...(let's not get into that again) besides yoko. Yeah, I'd prolly be just like Linda was in Wings. Little shy & a little bit scared at first...but then more at ease with it all.

I agree about getting to live the life that Linda lived (that doesn't mean I'm unhappy with my current situation, mind you). We only know so much about the personal lives of the Beatles/other rock stars, but Paul put his love for Linda out there despite the criticisms. This wasn't his ego, this was his genuine love for her and desire to be with her all the time. What a beautiful love story. And how unique that he shared it with the world, in his position. I think seeing him and Linda together made him EVEN MORE attractive (how can that be!
) Here's this man, beyond handsome, talented, and an uber star, and he had a real beautiful relationship. That's pretty special. And he was obviously (and still is) a great dad. Big points there for that too. As far as any other Beatle or rock star... no. Maybe a fun night or two ;), but not a relationship.

Looking at this from a totally different angle and coming from a more humble background, if I were married to a Beatle I'd feel a little uncomfortable/guilty regarding the extreme wealth. (I feel guilty sometimes even now and I am not rich at all.) I would probably lean toward wanting to give the majority of the money away to the poor/starving people of the world. Really, how much does one person need? Not that I think others should feel the same...this is how "I" would feel myself. Of course you can always set things up in your will for this to happen after you've left this earth. What a wonderful legacy that would be.

I always say he married the wrong Nancy!

I would have loved to have been in Wings with Paul (he would have had to teach me the keyboard too, though) I play guitar, so at least I would have had some musical background. And I would have stayed away from Abbey Road for the most part (Linda was only there a handful of times and she would take photos, then leave) I would have been happy to stay home with the kids!

I wasn't looking at it from the point of view of being married to a rich rock star. Sure, it's a "perk" but where I was coming from was that I would have loved being with Paul through all the years and experiencing all the things Linda did.

I totally understand how you meant it, Nancy, and that's the response I was going for. That was just me, being the realist I am, suddenly grasping the idea that I'd be filthy rich and I don't know anybody filthy rich. How strange a life that would be for me. If I married Paul I'd also probably have a dream wedding in an Irish castle and live on a huge estate in the Scottish countryside. I'm a big Downton Abbey fan so this part sounds so heavenly to me. Oh, and I'd have a clothes designer step-daughter. No more doing left-handed air guitar to Helter Skelter as I listen to YouTube...I'd let Paul sing it right in front of me. I may need to re-think my discomfort with wealth.
-
Yeah, rethink that discomfort! And you may also want to rethink a dream wedding in an Irish castle. That one didn't work out so well in the end for a certain Mrs. McCartney.

Perhaps you need to be of Irish descent to have it work like a charm, darlin'.(Maybe she IS , I don't know) My background is mostly Irish- I am first generation born in the US - so I would have been hoping that would have worked pretty well with the whole Irish castle idea. I wish I had an Irish lilt in my voice, I'd love that, but the most I can do is sort of imitate those old Lucky Charms cereal commercials.
-
I'm pretty shy and keep to myself, so no way I'd want all of the media attention.

Well if I had been given the chance to marry a Beatle it'd have to be George. I would have loved to have gone to India with George and experience spirituality never mind his fame and glory as a Beatle lol.
