"With a Little Help From My Friends"

This Sgt. Pepper ditty is not one of my faves but then I read Paul Mc. wrote this, and suddenly it seems a lot more bright, perky and appealing More joyous. Seems simple-minded but always sort of thought Ringo wrote this (just cause he sings it? --simplistic reaction). I wish Paul had sung this one. The melody is quite upbeat and happy...this song could almost have been on his album "New" and fitted in nicely there, you think? Has a "New" song feel
Would it surprise you to know that Paul also wrote Yellow Submarine (credited to Lennon/McCartney)? I think Octopus' Garden is the only Beatles song exclusively credited to Ringo Starr (he's listed as a co writer on Flying)

You forgot Don't Pass Me By, which is credited solely to "Richard Starkey". He has a 3 way writing credit with john and paul for what goes on as well.

Ah - thanks for the correction...I think I knew about Don't Pass Me By (but forgot), but didn't realize Ringo shared writing credits on What Goes On

Interestingly during their Australian tour of 64, an interviewer asked Ringo if he planned to write any songs and Paul mentioned he (Ringo) was working on one called Don't Pass Me By... So it was 5 years in the works.

Don't pass Me By isn't all that much of a song, surprised it took "five years" to write

According to "Tune In" by Mark Lewisohn, Ringo first played the song not long after he joined the group in August 1962!
-
Don't forget that Paul's 'When I'm 64' pre dates the Beatles

Yeah, he wrote the tune when he was 14 or 15! (Lyrics in '67)

Songs aren't always written then recorded. He probably wrote the song in 1962 and let is sit for five years then revived it. It's no worse that Why Don't We Do It In The Road or Wild Honey Pie.

I dig "Road" and "Wild Honey Pie" I done flip-flopped on "With a Little Help From My Friends"--now I feel crazy about it :

Why Don't We Do It in the Road sits as one of my favourite Beatles' songs. I know there are many better, on so many other levels, but I just love it. Short and sharp. Brilliant vocal. Not worthy of majestic praise, I know, not like so many other outputs, but if I put a compilation together of my Top 20, it would find its way there. Rouses me every time I listen to it. Just one of my little indulgences.

Now I'm going to stick my foot in it. I've Always heard the SGT. Pepper version as though it represented a public introduction to the band by "Billy Shears" at a press conference, followed by a Q & A session, like the early Beatlemania press conferences where they introduced themselves, often with wit, and then were asked all those kinds of questions. And I've always heard the Joe Cocker version, not as "a Q & A Press Conference" replica, but instead as a talk with one's self and with the listener. As a bit of soul searching. I suppose that is all wrong now.
I always thought that's what it was. If there's more than once of us, we can't be wrong (internet logic).
