Paul McCartney Talks Nixed 'McCartney/Lennon' Songwriting Credit "The original artwork had 'Yesterday' by John Lennon and Paul McCartney and a photo of John above it. And I went, 'Argh, Come on, lads,'" bassist says By Daniel Kreps July 5, 2015 Read more:

It should stay Lennon/McCartney, not McCartney/Lennon! Go by the alphabet.

For the exception of "PLEASE PLEASE ME" (The Album), "WINGS OVER AMERICA," and "BACK IN THE U. S."

The alphabet and the musical rhythm. Anyone who ever wrote a poem knows why it's Lennon and McCartney.
Of course, McCartney has spent the last forty years trying to teach people who REALLY wrote "Yesterday" and the day he retire there'll be a new generation ten minutes later who think it was JOHN LENNON and Paul McCartney. But that's just the way things work. History rolls over you... You can't fight it.

As I posted in another thread they were told they would take turns...and now in this digital age...sometimes McCartney gets cut off. Especially when it is John Lennon - Paul McCartney.
-
Well, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Jagger / Richards, Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht... These are not only iconic collaborations but also iconic combinations in music. It's a song written by Hammerstein and Rodgers... Nobody say that. It's Rodgers and Hammerstein. it's their collective name. Just like Lennon and McCartney. if you twist it around it's like saying McPaul Cartney, Lenn Johnnen. It's not their name(s)...

McCartney at his insecure worst yet again.

McCartney at his insecure worst yet again.
Come on! It was the photo of John that probably set him off the most. He has every right to be upset.

I don't know. I think it sounds a bit old and lonely. Too much time to sit and think about what's mine and what's yours. I guess The Beatles once upon a time were a bucnh of young guys who were best friends with each other. What's mine is yours., and vice versa.

I wonder how you would feel if you were one of the greatest songwriters of our time and you wrote a song by yourself that was covered by over 2000 other artists and it was credited with your songwriting partner's name first along with a photo of him instead of you!
-
I'm not saying that I would be different. Just that I find it sad. How things evolve.

Can't we just go by the alphabet, Lennon/McCartney? It was an agreement between John and Paul, all of the Beatles' songs were credited to Lennon/McCartney from the beginning to the end of The Beatles. Paul changed it to McCartney/Lennon AFTER John died! By the way, I love everyone's comments!

I think music has a value and pop songs are kind of folk music of the world. But to sit and feel sorry for a songwriter who fills the stadiums with his songs and is in the Guiness Book of Records, because he read an article in a magazine where his old bandmate got more attention than himself, is ridiculous. I don't blame him though. This world treats him (and rich celebrities) like he is the second coming of Christ. And not like the working musician, that he really is.

Great point Hendrix Ibsen!!! You have to admit, The Beatles are more popular than Jesus!

The original agreement in September 1962,made between John,Paul & (manager) Brian, was that whoever was the primary writer of the song, had their name listed first. This actually worked for the first two singles but then things became confused a few months later with the release of the Beatles debut album. Depending on what copy you have, all the original songs were either credited to McCartney / Lennon or Lennon/ McCartney, irrespective of who mainly wrote the song. This was the main argument of Paul's, made many years later, of wanting to go back to the original agreement. And what would have happened if they'd written a song completely 50 / 50. As Mark Lewisohn's points out in his excellent book 'The Beatles Tune In', they didn't come to any firm decision on that point because they hadn't written any totally joint songs together up to that point.

Is it a difficult thing for McCartney to switch the credits? I don't know anything about things like this. But he wrote the song(s) and if he feels like it... I guess that's more important than anyone else's opinion about it.

I don't think McCartney has a problem with who gets top credit or first credit or top billing in a songwriting team. I mean his new songwriting partner is Kanye West and his last name begins with the letter "W."

Did Kanye get his name listed first?
