I keep reading conflicting reports. Paul got in an argument with John but I find it hard to believe he would let George play his bass parts over him.

According to Paul himself, he did indeed not play on the song. During the intense session, McCartney argued with other band members, and walked out of the studio. In Many Years From Now, McCartney vaguely described the incident:

        Paul McCartney:

"John brought it in pretty much finished, I think. I'm not sure but I think it was one of the only Beatle records I never played on. I think we'd had a barney or something and I said, 'Oh, fuck you!' and they said, 'Well, we'll do it.' I think George played bass."

In the book "Beatles '66", it also mentions Paul stormed out of the session. It also says that in January 1969, when John accused Paul of taking over the "Let It Be" project, John said (in the film) that the only way to record something to his satisfaction was to do it alone. He then said to Paul, "The only regret I have about past numbers is because I've allowed you to take it somewhere I didn't want it to go. Then my only chance was to let George take over because I knew he'd take it. Like on "She Said She Said."
