It was a great analysis & observations done by the reporter. Had to make sure it was Rolling Stone! He must have read this Board as he agrees the U.S. version might be better than the U.K. version & he loved the 1-2 punch of I've Just Seen a Face & Norwegian Wood. He also called What Goes On as the only throwaway. The Beatles left their contemporaries for good, starting with RS. A major leap forward.

Great article! And yeah, Rubber Soul is a great album. It's really kind of hard to remember now how revolutionary the Beatles were during this period, and not just Rubber Soul. "Yesterday," which seems like such a standard today, was a completely revolutionary record for a rock 'n' roll band to put out in 1965.

"The only true patriotism, the only rational patriotism is loyalty to the nation all the time, loyalty to government when it deserves it."

Nice article. I enjoyed listening to the link of them in the studio too. Don't think I've heard that sequence before.

That was so funny! Paul: "Do you want to fight?" John: "No." Paul: "Okay"

That's my favorite Beatles album. I've owned the US LP, and 8-track; and the UK LP, cassette, and CD. I think "I've Just Seen A Face" blends in well on Rubber Soul. I agree that "What Goes On" should be What Goes Off this album. Sorry, Ringo.

I totally agree! I would rather listen to Wild Honey Pie 10 times in a row than What Goes On once! I always skip it when listening to Rubber Soul. (or Yesterday and Today!)

Its also my least favorite Beatles song (written by them). I never liked the "faux country" style they used on some of their early albums.

I was at Billy Joel concert last Saturday (Charlotte NC) and he commented that is was the 50th anniversary of this great album and proceeded to do the song "Norwegian Wood" which was pretty cool. It was not "Rubber Soul" related but he also did a bit of a mashup by going into "Hard Days" Night" while doing his song "River Of Dreams".

                                  Maybe I'm amazed !!

Really? By a long way??? I'ts my favorite...this week. Next week it will or could be "Revolver" and then "The White Album" and then "Abbey Raod" and then, maybe, "Sgt. Pepper.." It never stays the same. Impossible to just identify one as my favorite and stick with it. Same thing goes for their songs. Can't identify just one as a favorite. But...for me,"Rubber Soul" first demonstrated just how quickly The Beatles were growing artistically and creatively...in a mere 3 or 4 months after "HELP!". There had been a hint of it on the UK version of "HELP," but "Rubber Soul" confirmed it. The songs are all outstanding. NOW, IF THEY WOULD ONLY GIVE IT THE STEREO REMIX TREATMENT THEY DID FOR THE SINGLE THAT WAS LEFT OFF THE ALBUM: "WE CAN WORK IT OUT/DAY TRIPPER" WITH THE VOCALS COMING FROM THE CENTER OF THE MIX, I WOULD BE IN HEAVEN!!!!

For me, "Its Only Love" will always be a "Rubber Soul" song. It just fits there. Side one of "HELP!" is perfect. Side two seems to have some of this and some of that....good/great songs, which just seem sort of placed there to fill out an album....the UK one. I really have no issue with "What Goes On." It's a perfect Ringo song.....and Paul's harmony is perfect for it. George does some nice guitar work. It all works and fits on the album.....
