I always thought it's about people and Paul in particular missing departed loved ones, feeling utterly broken hearted but "there is still a chance they may see" the departed loved ones again. Paul's mother's name was Mary.

When I first heard this song as a darned fool kid, I always connected it to Mary, the Mother of Jesus (of course if Dan Brown had written his derivative novel at the time, it would've been tossed into the mix as a clue to Mary Magdalene and Jesus' bloodline) Later, whilst still being a darned fool kid, I became aware it could be referring to Paul's mum. Either way, the song lyrics don't give too much away as to the true identity. Either way, a dynamite song.

It's a perfect line in the song...it works since people can interpret it the way it has most meaning for them. The obvious Mother Mary biblical interpretation, the mother-child relationship, etc. All the while, it keeps the special significance for the songwriter in this case. That's why I hate some of Lennon's songs - Oh Yoko, How do You Sleep - since its hard for the listener to get passed who he is obviously referring to in these songs.

I heard it on the radio coming home from work yesterday and I agree!

This is actually mentioned in the Respect film however they do not say what the song is, just that she needs to make a decision about a song that the Beatles want to record and she turns it down due to being too catholic.
