Because they were white and looked dirty IMO. Paul's were black and matched what he was wearing.

Stella had a coat on and looked just fine and of course was fashionable. James IMO looked like he just got out of the gym and threw a coat on. His hair was a mess and there are ways to make receding hairline look nice.

James. "Oh he's my father"

The Interviewer was obviously joking with him ( or at least trying) but the lad never saw it. Oh well.
