Today's sermon at church the (female) minister talked about Paul writing the song Let It Be and what it was about etc. She got the whole story correct about his mother Mary and his "times of trouble." She segued into the story of the angel Gabriel visiting the Virgin Mary and telling her she was going to have a baby.

I wonder how many folks thought it was their favorite sermon!

At the time it was released I seemed to recall a theory that Mary was Mary Hopkins who Paul had produced. This obviously was not true as Mary was in fact his mum. Interesting though that during Wings Glasgow Concert (Last Flight) Denny Laine introduces "Let It Be" as a "religious contribution" to which Paul responds "thankyou vicar." Really like the piano in this song and for me this is a Beatles classic.

I always came back to the songs he was singing,
          At any particular time

Sure, it's about his mum and if it's been adopted as a universal/ peace anthem/religious overtones song: then all good. It can mean whatever any listener wants it to be. Originally written with Aretha Franklin in mind???

Where did you hear that? Surely not for the subject matter, maybe like her "style" of singing.

Can't recall. Just springs to mind. Probably read in in one of a zillion books on the Fabs or maybe heard it somewhere. Note I did put question marks after the Aretha line. Could be something to it - could be tish...but it's one of those weird niggly Beatley things that buzzes around my head (like butterflies) 😉

Of course she recorded it. But was it first offered to her and she said thanks but no thanks? Maybe Paul thought hell, this is too good to give away - we'll do it. Gee there's a question to put to Paul!!!
