Concerts Too Loud
-
The "Out There" Tour was great, but way too loud! The show at the Barclays Center was crazy loud, my ears were ringing for hours! The Yankee Stadium shows were much quieter, they were not loud at all. Did anybody notice this or are all the arena shows generally that loud?

The sound in DC was fine in the stadium and I was in the 7th row. Same at Outside Lands.

Remember, arenas are an enclosed venue, so the "loudness" has nowhere to do, whereas an outdoor stadium show is probably louder, but the sound more easily lost in the open air.

As long as my ears don't start bleeding, Paul could never be too loud for me!
I was 4th row center in Memphis (arena) & it was fine!
-
I like it loud. It's a rock-show for Chrissakes.

The only time I literally thought 'too loud' while at a Paul McCartney concert was during the performance of Fool on the Hill (from the 2002 tour) where I found the fake flutes piercing. Funny enough I don't recall having the same issue during the 89/90 tour

But Wix didn't play on "Fool On The Hill" during the '02 tour, right? I thought that was during Paul's solo spot in the show.

Wix was still in the mix - but to your point, the rest of the band was off stage...unlike the 89/90 version which involved full band participation Edit - here's a video from 2002
While the entire stretch of songs from Blackbird to Something (on the Uke) was during the time Paul announced to the crowd that 'they've left him all alone (on stage)', there were actually a couple of songs with Wix's participation - besides Fool on the Hill, Wix also played the accordion on Mother Nature's Son and whatever you call it on Vanilla Sky (LOL) -
I stand corrected.

Only time I was a tad worried about it being too loud was in London 1993 when I was pregnant with my third child - especially during Live & Let Die
: Of course she loves Paul btw

sorry about your ears kid. You are a lightweight. Paul's levels are perfect!

jena....

It's because it's an arena...especially the Barclays. I've heard this complaint about almost every other (decent) concert review I've read of the joint.
-
...umm... Too loud?
Wow...I thought that young folks liked their music loud? I stand corrected!

Never too loud! I do know what you mean though about the type of venue. I saw Paul twice in one week this past year and noticed it. Once in expansive, open-roof Miller Park and once in the way-smaller closed arena of Indianapolis. Huge difference to me. In Milwaukee, the sound had a lot more room to travel. It bounced around the field and sounded more expansive than in-your-face. In Indianapolis at the Fieldhouse...it was the opposite. I was drooling! The sound was right there, loud and thick and powerful. Bass notes made my heart pound. Loved every second. I have friends and family who tell me about Wings Over America in '76 being the loudest concert they ever attended. One friend claims to have lost a little bit of hearing from it...

Enclosed arenas are definitely louder, but I enjoy the fact that the audience is louder, too. The Montreal arena shows I've seen are the loudest, and Barclays didn't even come close (hate to say it, King Macca!). If that was loud, you'd never last at a Paul show north of the border.

I'm fine with the audience being loud, (Barclays June 8th audience SUCKED) but the sound quality was terrible. Were the Philadelphia shows as loud as the Barclays Center (Music-wise)

Arena shows can be louder depending on the sound system. Paul uses different systems for indoor or outdoor venues. Outdoors a lot of sound carries off so the acoustics are different. Indoors can sound worse, and depends on the acoustics of the arena. Honda Center for instance is a terrible place for a concert. It has a very high ceiling with a lot of steel frame, so the sound is muddy and echoey, whereas the old L.A. Sports Arena has fantastic acoustics and is very clear. I saw Paul at Oakland Arena in 2002 and HP Pavilion in San Jose in '05. Both were loud, but the sound in Oakland was much better. Those places were not generally built for concerts, but sporting events. Whereas at a place designed for concerts, like The Joint in Las Vegas, the sound was loud but it was perfect. To me the loudest was The New World Tour at Anaheim Stadium. It was very clear but incredibly loud. My ears took 3 days to recover.

Yeah! You were there! The only time I didn't like the sound was when Paul played the GA Dome in '93. I saw the Stones there too and it was awful! (unless you were in the front/center of the arena I would imagine) This is a HUGE arena too.
