Neil Finn and Tim Finn should be in there as well.
I'd have Neil in there absolutely, one of the best songwriters of the last thirty years! I think his lack of commercial success in the US is probably held against him being on the list. If this was a UK mags list it would be a very different story!
How true! (I don't even know who Neil & Tim Finn are!) ops:
You've never heard of Split Enz and Crowded House? Really??
I've heard the name Crowded House only, but have no idea who's in the group!
Problem i guess is that Crowded House had two big hits in the US in the mid '80's and then just fell off the radar over in America. Thing is Nancy even in the UK where they have had much more commercial success Neil is not known, only the band name and the hits are known reasonably well.
The list is crazy. Anyone who knows anything about pop song writing knows who Neil Finn is. Kenye West is more famous than Neil Finn. He is nowhere in Neil's league as a songwriter.

I think Paul should have been ranked in first place. From a hardcore fan
I have no problem with # 1, 2, and 3...it's the other 97 I have a problem with.

I agree with you. Well, it seems like the rest of the 100 have bigger problems than 1, 2, and 3.

I didn't like most of the music in the '80's (except Paul, George & Ringo of course!) but I take offense at your statement "Anyone who knows anything about pop song writing knows who Neil Finn is." I was a child of the '60's in the U.S., not of the '80's in the UK. (I had to Google him to find out he is from New Zealand!)

Today on the radio in KC I heard FIVE McCartney tunes (Jet, Yesterday, Live and Let Die, Hey Jude, and With a Little Luck). I heard zero Dylan songs and zero Lennon songs. Just saying.
And we all know that radio play is a rock-solid indicator of artistic merit, right?

It wasn't an insult. It's the truth! Have you listened to any of his songs? Here's one you need to hear. The best song Paul never wrote:

I have a friend, Love2travel on this board, who apart from Don't Dream It's Over and Something So Strong knew nothing of Crowded House or who Neil was at all, but since knowing me has become a Neil Finn acolyte!

The album Woodface is brilliant. Four Seasons in One Day is sublime, for me only bettered by "Fall At Your Feet". Neil Finn a giant of songwriting.

Taylor Swift makes it into the top 100 and Kate Bush doesn't? Totally laughable list which is impossible to take seriously.
If they didn't put in the current trends, people would be outraged.

Same here. There are probably a million British '80s bands whose members I can't name.

That made me laugh. The radio here plays a lot of K-pop. Maybe Super Junior are great artists.

No, sorry, but have never heard any of his songs until this one you posted. Parts of it were nice, but it didn't "bowl" me over or anything. And what I meant was just because I never heard of Neil Finn doesn't mean I'm not aware of many many other great pop songwriters.

The Beatles and The Clash were the only two rock bands that ever mattered.

I'll agree with you on The Beatles (of course) but I really also like The Who.

The Who are one of my favourite bands. The Kinks were amazing & I've seen them both in concert in the early 80's. When I was a kid like many other kids we never liked our parents music & they never appreciated our music. Today; I don't like any of the music tweens/teens are listening to. Every generation is different. It seems that rock n' roll is dying or dead. I'm happy that bands that I really enjoy (Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Santana & of course Paul) are still recording music/touring because they enjoy it. If you enjoy what you're doing you'll never have to work another day in your life. Cheers!

I can't believe those Air Supply guys aren't on the list.

I don't think there are 100 hundred greatest songwriters to be honest. Maybe there are 10. I doubt it. In classical music you have like a handful of great composers in a thousand years. Beyond that there will be personal favorites that one might like to say are undervalued but which are less "important" historically speaking. I remember one time that Steve Earle said Townes Van Zandt was a better songwriter than Bob Dylan. The greatest ever. But if you look at it from a historical perspective is Dylan much like a Napoleon of songwriters. It is an unfair comparison because Dylan is important. He is a giant. If you don't like his music, one can say he is overrated among the undervalued. But it changes nothing, Dylan fills up the pages in music history books.

This makes no sense. There have been more than 100 songwriters, so of course there are 100 greatest. And -- particularly if you go back to pre- rock 'n' roll -- it would not be hard to pick 100 that are really, really excellent.

I think almost all of us could come up with at least 100. There would probably be a very wide variety, too.

Every time I see the misspelled title of this thread, I think is says "Snogwriters!"
