I'd love to hear Summertime from early Hamburg, but alas...

It's not like you can't. Both recordings are from the Decca audition. "Hello Little Girl" can be found on Anthology 1, and "Til There Was You" can be found on the Internet.

Right. Thank you! Then the article is misleading. From what it said, I was under the impression that this record was not made at the Decca studio on New Year's Day 1962. The article states, " The 1962 record made at the HMV record store on Oxford Street in London is believed to be the only one made. It was given by the band's manager, Brian Epstein, to producer George Martin, who later signed the group." But as it turns out, this record up for auction was a transfer from the Decca tapes onto acetate. Thanks for pointing that out.

Brian Epstein gave it to Les McGuire of Gerry and the Pacemakers. http://www.examiner.com/article/rare-beatles-78-rpm-disc-that-helped-get-them-a-record-deal-up-for-auction?CID=examiner_alerts_article

No, it was recorded at Decca on Jan. 1, 1962 and the 78 was pressed at HMV record store on Oxford St. Read the Examiner article I posted above. This info is in Mark Lewisohn's book Tune In as well.

That's what joyce was saying. The article she initially posted is misleading because it doesn't say the recordings were from the Decca New Year's Day audition.

Sorry Joyce! Didn't read carefully what you wrote!

That's okay--no problem! D "...The 10-inch (25 centimeter) demo record is expected to fetch at least 10,000 pounds ($14,000) when it goes on auction March 22 at Omega Auctions in Warrington." It'll be interesting to see who buys it.

http://www.examiner.com/article/holy-grail-beatles-decca-auditions-record-sells-for-over-110-000?CID=examiner_alerts_article Wildly exceeded the original estimate of how much it would sell for!
-
Indeed!! Thanks, Nancy R! Perhaps we'll soon find out who bought it and if it will ever be displayed in public.

On one side of the disc, Epstein wrote the names of the songs on the label, misspelling them each time. He attributed: "Hullo Little Girl" (Hello Little Girl) by John Lennon & The Beatles, while on the flip side, he wrote: "'Til There Was You," (Till There was You) by Paul McCartney & The Beatles. Paul's MPL owns the pub rights to "Til There Was You." "Hello Little Girl" (Len/Mac) is owned by Northern Songs Ltd c/o Sony ATV And it's on Anthology 1
