Hi! Doing pretty good, and hope you are too. Yes, Stu was the oldest Beatle. It really is hard to comprehend that here we are, over 52 years from The Ed Sullivan Show, and still talking about them!
-
What's more amazing is that people are still talking about Stu all these years later. The Beatles were so big that even people who left before they became big are still famous today.

Great bass player for the Beatles. Gave them their look..and their name. Inspiration for perhaps the best song ever written.

: He was a lousy bass player! And it was Astrid who gave them their look (hair) He did suggest "Beetles." But what song was he inspiration for? I'm blanking.

Ah! Pete Shotton said that John told him that the line "some are dead and some are living" referred to Stu and Pete.

"But of all these friends and lovers, there is no one compares with you. And these memories lose their meaning, when I think of love as something new." In My Life is not about Stuart Sutcliffe. Sorry.

This period of time in human history with our incredibly increased knowledge and ability to travel quickly all over the earth was predictable and predicted centuries upon centuries ago by life's deepest thinkers. This era of profound discovery was looked forward to and will be looked back upon for centuries upon centuries in the future as well... (by the grace of God) King James Version (KJV) Daniel 12:4 "But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased." 1And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. 2And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. 3And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever. 4But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.

Stu's paintings are selling for big bucks, Stu is bigger in death than when he was alive! The movie Backbeat only added more to The Beatles' and Stu's legend.

John's mother Julia was one of the main loved ones he was thinking of upon composing "In My Life," I think. Sutcliffe was one. "But of all these friends and lovers, there is no one compares to you, and these memories lose their meaning when I think of love as something new." So--who exactly did John refer to, in this line? And how in the world could memories of Julia "lose their meaning" ? And of Stuart Sutcliffe too, for that matter. Brian Epstein could well have been a major memory. But if all these were literal lovers--but he does say "But of all these FRIENDS and lovers"-- I'm gonna keep pondering this mystery off and on...if somebody could provide the answer that would be peachy, they'd be a pearl

I should have rephrased that & said Stu was the major inspiration for the song. As Nancy said, per Pete Shotton, who was very honest about the songwriting process in those middle years, since he had inside access to the band, especially John.

Well, duh, it must have been Cynthia : unless John was thinking of platonic love, then it may have been Paul, because of longtime friendship and magical songwriting partnership
-
John had said that for the line, "some are dead and some are living", Stu was the deceased friend and Pete S. was the living.

John never wrote a song for Cynthia! In My Life was mostly about friends like Stu, Pete etc. and he was probably thinking about his mum too. He loved her the most.

That's what I said on page 1 of this thread.

...or maybe it was Alma Cogan, Eleanor Bron, Joan Baez, Brigitte Bardot, Mamie van Doren, Ronnie Spector, or any one of a cast of thousands "In My Life" is a delicious ditty, very moving and heart-felt, and then I had to go and sort of take the Mickey a little...meant no harm, nor to detract from its charm
