Look up question: The Man Who Gave The Beatles Away
-
Hi, is there a good soul who wants to do a lookup in the abovementioned book? I cannot find my own copy at the moment.... 16 August 1960 the Beatles went from Liverpool to Hamburg. I seem to remember that Allan Williams described the journey in the Netherlands as going from The Hook of Holland, via The Hague and then to Arnhem, where the WW2 cemetery photo was taken. But Mark Lewisohn writes about this as from The Hook via Rotterdam (not The Hague). Can someone cornfirm my thought that Williams wrote The Hague rather than Rotterdam? I know, a footnote of a footnote.....

That's one book I don't have (The Allan Williams one) out of about 150!
Sorry!

Yes, you are quite correct: Allan does mention the Hook, then the Hague, then Arnhem.

I'm going with Mark Lewisohn! That guy is right about everything! Plus Allan Williams was so poor at remembering stuff like names that he never called The Beatles their correct names, and he kept booking them as The "Beetles!" (he was a terrible speller too)

Thanks for the lookup. Yes, I heard/read that Allan Williams was /is very bad at names and recollections, and Mark Lewisohn is what we know. BUT. In the 1960's the international route E8, from London to Hannover, which was on the roadsigns, was London - Harwich - Hook - The Hague and then via Utrecht eastward. I know, because I lived in The Hague at the time. (In 1975 or so this European roadnumbering system was changed, E8 is now in Finland.) So there is a slight possibillity that Allan is right and, dare I say it? , Mark is mistaken.... Again: a footnote of a footnote, nothing important, I just noticed because of the mentioning of The Hague/Rotterdam.

This is being slightly pedantic but even Harwich isn't right, which was stated by both Allan Williams and Mark Lewisohn as being the place of departure. All the ferry crossings were from Parkeston Quay, which is (unsurprisingly) at Parkeston, a mile west of Harwich.

Mark Lewisohn invites corrections, etc. at the end of his book. Go to www.marklewisohn.net and contact him.

No way, he might want his book back and then it'll be another ten year wait before I get to read it again.

Well, I have send my suggestion for The Hague/Rotterdam to Mark Lewisohn for his consideration and judgement.
